This is my boyfriends horse Misty. She is so gentle and sweet and I love braiding her hair. This evening I brushed horses with my boyfriends mom and we braided the horses hair. I had the idea of giving her bubble braids and I think they turned out good. Do you guys think they look good or do you have any other recommendations for hairstyles?
... Read moreIt was such a heartwarming experience braiding Misty's hair! Seeing her stand so patiently while I worked on her mane and tail, it just reinforced how special the bond with horses truly is. Since I shared my bubble braids, I've been thinking a lot about other cool horse hairstyles and practical tips I've picked up along the way. I love making my equine friends look and feel their best, and I'm excited to share some of my go-to ideas and tricks!
Why I Love Bubble Braids for Horses
Bubble braids aren't just for people; they look absolutely adorable on horses! They're fantastic for keeping a long mane tidy, especially for trail rides or just everyday neatness. Plus, they're often much easier to do than traditional braids, making them a great option if you're still practicing your braiding skills. I found they really showcased Misty's beautiful dark mane. The 'BUBBLE BRAIDS On a horse' text from my photo caption really sums up the fun of it!
My Simple Steps for Mane Bubble Braids:
Prep is Key: Always start with a clean, brushed mane. I like to use a detangling spray to make sure there are no knots, which makes the whole process smoother and more comfortable for the horse.
Section It Out: Grab a small section of mane, about an inch or two wide, right at the crest of the neck.
First Bubble: Secure this section with a small, horse-safe elastic band. Don't pull it too tight – comfort is paramount!
Add More Hair: Take another section of mane directly beneath the first one. Combine it with the loose hair from your first secured section.
Second Bubble (and Beyond!): Secure this new, larger section with another elastic, creating that signature 'bubble' effect. Gently pull the hair between the elastics to puff out the bubble a little.
Repeat: Continue this process down the length of the mane. For a longer mane, you might get many bubbles, for a shorter one, just a few statement ones!
And don't forget the tail! Just like the 'Can't forget the tail' overlay in one of my pictures, a well-braided tail can really complete the look. You can use the same bubble braid technique down the dock of the tail for a super unique and clean appearance.
Making Your Horse Braids Extra Cool: Tips & Tricks
Accessorize! Think beyond just elastics. You can weave in small ribbons that match your horse's pink halter or even add tiny flowers for a special occasion. Just be sure they're securely attached and won't bother your horse.
Vary the Size: Experiment with different sized sections for bigger, bolder bubbles or smaller, more delicate ones. This is your chance to get creative and give your horse a real 'horsey haircut'!
Keep it Loose but Secure: The goal is a neat braid that doesn't put any undue tension on the hair or skin. A happy horse makes the best model.
Practice Makes Perfect: Don't get discouraged if your first attempt isn't flawless. Just like any grooming skill, braiding takes practice. The more you do it, the quicker and neater you'll become.
Other "Horsey Haircuts" I Love
While bubble braids are a current favorite, there are so many other ways to style a horse's mane and tail that I find really cool:
Running Braids: These are fantastic for keeping a long mane neatly contained along the neck. They're elegant and practical, perfect for schooling or a relaxed trail ride. It's like a continuous French braid along the crest.
Button Braids (Rosettes): These classic, tightly rolled braids are a staple in the show ring. They take a bit more time and skill, but the polished result is always stunning. Each little 'button' makes the neck look beautifully arched.
French Braided Tails: For horses with long tails, a French braid down the dock not only looks beautiful but also keeps the tail out of the way, preventing tangles and snags, especially in muddy pastures.
Ultimately, grooming is a wonderful way to bond with your horse. Whether you're doing simple bubble braids, a fancy show braid, or just a good brush-out, these moments are precious. It’s all about showing our equine companions how much we care and making them feel like the 'pretty girl' they are!
