It provides a way to engage with others without fully exposing the extent of their inner struggles. This is especially true in communities centered around hashtags like #recovery, #wieiads, and #recoverytok, where peer connection is vital but vulnerable moments can be difficult to share openly. This masking behavior isn’t about hiding intentionally to deceive others; rather, it’s a subconscious way to cope. When I was deeply embedded in my disordered patterns, I resonated with the idea expressed in the discussion of WIEIADs — “Where’s the ideal eating and dieting?” — which are often core themes in Eating Disorder TikTok (EDtok-core). Recognizing these patterns helped me see how visual and written content online could act as distractions not only for the audience but for myself, shielding my true pain. However, as my recovery progressed, this awareness of my own masking became a crucial piece of my healing. It allowed me to begin peeling back layers and share more genuine aspects of my experience, fostering deeper connections and receiving better support. For anyone navigating similar paths, acknowledging that content might serve as a mask rather than a full story can be a powerful step toward growth and authenticity. Engaging with recovery communities online can be a double-edged sword — while they offer tremendous support and solidarity, they can also unintentionally reinforce these masks. Being mindful of this dynamic encourages us to balance our online presence with honesty and self-compassion.
