Setting a reading goal for the year, like my personal 150-book challenge, is such an exciting way to kickstart your reading journey! But let's be real, it's one thing to say "I want to read more" and another to actually define and achieve those reading goals. Based on my own experiences and what's worked for me, here’s how I approach defining and achieving my yearly reading targets, hopefully inspiring you to keep reading and finish your first book of the year with confidence. First off, defining your reading goal isn't just about picking a number. While "150 books" sounds ambitious (and it is!), it's also about what you want to read. Do you want to explore new genres, tackle classics you've always put off, or dive deep into non-fiction? My strategy usually involves a mix: a core number of books, plus a few genre-specific mini-goals. For instance, this year I'm aiming for 150 books, but also trying to read at least 10 fantasy novels and 5 books by diverse authors. This makes the overall goal feel less daunting and more interesting. Think about what would genuinely excite you, not just what sounds impressive. Once you've defined your goal, achieving it becomes the next adventure. This is where daily habits and smart tracking come into play. I've found that consistency is key. Even if it's just 20-30 minutes a day, those pages add up! I try to make reading a part of my routine, whether it's with my morning coffee or before bed. Some days I'll power through a whole book, and other days I might only manage a chapter, but the important thing is to keep the momentum going. Don't be discouraged by a slow start; remember, you have 364 days left to reach your target! Joining a Reading Challenge is also a huge motivator. There are so many great communities online, like on Lemon8, where you can share your progress and get recommendations. Seeing others hit their milestones, or even just sharing your current read, creates a sense of accountability and makes reading feel less like a solitary activity. I love seeing the "0 of 150 books read" turn into higher numbers as the year progresses, and these challenge details often have fun prompts that encourage you to pick up books you might not usually consider. What about when you hit a reading slump? We all do! My trick is to have a diverse TBR (To Be Read) pile. If a heavy literary fiction isn't working, I'll switch to a lighter romance or a gripping thriller. Sometimes, it's about finding that one book that pulls you back in. Don't be afraid to put a book down if it’s not working for you – life’s too short to force yourself through unengaging reads when there are so many amazing books out there. Remember, the goal is to enjoy reading, not just to tick boxes. I hope these tips help you define and crush your own reading goals this year!
