Travel with Me: Horseshoe Bend 📍
I was born and raised in Arizona and had never made it out to Horseshoe Bend up north until last year. 😅 It was only maybe a mile or so from the parking lot to the overlook (honestly I had been hoping for a better hike), and it was a breath taking view. I wish we had been able to kayak down in the water, but that’s a bucket list item for next time we go.
Also doesn’t hurt that the drive up there was beautiful, the rock formations were so cool. 🥰

Picking up from my recent trip, I absolutely have to share more about why Horseshoe Bend is a fantastic spot for families, especially if you're planning an Arizona road trip! It's not just for adventure seekers; it offers something truly special for all ages, making it a must-see on your family travel list. First off, let's talk about the hike. The original article mentioned the mile-long walk, and I can confirm it's quite manageable, even with little ones. The path is well-maintained and mostly flat, making it suitable for sturdy strollers if you have very young kids, though a baby carrier might be easier for navigating any small sandy or gravelly patches. We saw several families with children of all ages enjoying the stroll. Remember, even though it's short, the desert sun can be intense, so hydrating is key, especially for kids! Carry more water than you think you'll need, and encourage everyone to drink regularly. Safety is super important at Horseshoe Bend, especially when visiting with family. The overlook, while stunning, is largely unfenced, so keeping a very close eye on children is non-negotiable. I highly recommend setting clear boundaries before you even get close to the edge and holding hands if you're near the drop-off. Take your family photos (like that classic selfie with the incredible red rock canyon backdrop!) a safe distance back. The sheer drop-off is awe-inspiring but demands respect, and a moment of inattention can be dangerous. While the iconic view is undoubtedly the main event, families can extend their fun beyond just the overlook. My dream of kayaking the Colorado River below is definitely something I want to do with my family next time. There are guided tours that can make this a fantastic, safe experience for older kids, offering a unique perspective of the bend from the water. For younger adventurers, exploring nearby Page offers additional options like Antelope Canyon tours (be sure to check age restrictions and accessibility) or simply enjoying the scenic drives through those stunning desert mountains we passed on the way, perhaps spotting some local wildlife from your car window. Don't forget the essentials when packing for a family day at Horseshoe Bend! Sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, and plenty of water are an absolute must. Comfortable walking shoes for everyone are key, as even a short walk can be tiring in the heat. If you're visiting in cooler months, layers are a good idea as temperatures can fluctuate. And of course, a camera to capture those incredible aerial views and family moments – just like our selfie at the edge! Snacks are also a lifesaver for keeping energy levels up for little travelers. To make the experience most comfortable for your family, consider visiting during the cooler months (fall to spring) or early in the morning/late afternoon during summer to avoid the midday heat. Not only is it more pleasant temperature-wise, but the light during these times also makes for spectacular photos of the Colorado River winding through the bend, casting beautiful colors on the landscape. Horseshoe Bend truly offers a memorable experience for families. It’s a powerful reminder of nature's raw beauty and definitely a highlight of any Arizona roadtrip. Planning ahead with these family-specific tips will ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable, and unforgettable time at this breathtaking natural wonder.
