Books I’ve Read Recently ✨📚
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this one. It was written 40-50 years ago and you can tell by the language and descriptions used in the book.
The book follows a family and their family friends going to their vacation home following the death of the matriarch of the family. There are three homes on this property, and one of them is (shockingly) haunted. The family has a really weird dynamic. Like the dad and his daughter are weirdly close. Weirdly close as in he lets her drink, swear, and see him naked and they act like that isn’t weird? And she’s like 12-13? 🤨🤢
I have to say that the ending was the best part of the book, the rest of it felt REALLY SLOW. I don’t think I can even call it a slow burn, tbh. Just slow and “subtly” racist.
⭐️Overall rating: 4/10 (being generous). It’s not worth the read imo.

The book in question is a reflection of its time, written several decades ago, which contributes to both its charm and shortcomings. Such literature often exhibits cultural nuances and themes that may not align with today's societal standards. Readers looking for depth in characterization might find themselves longing for a modern narrative approach. The mention of hauntings and family dynamics taps into generational storytelling traditions, inviting discussions about how family histories shape experiences. Additionally, comparisons have been drawn to contemporary narratives that explore similar themes of legacy and the supernatural. Moreover, the author cited Stephen King's comments about notable writers in the genre, hinting at the rich tradition of horror and psychological storytelling that informs this work. While engaging with older texts, one can observe how horror tropes and family-centered plots have evolved over the years, providing a backdrop for critical analysis. Potential readers are encouraged to approach this title with an understanding of its historical context, enriching their reading experience.
