My Review on An Ember in the Ashes

Book Review

Book name: An Ember in the Ashes

Author: Sabaa Tahir

Genre: Fantasy

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My review: This book was just wow! I was hooked from the first page. It was vilolently beautiful and intense. I saw similarities to fourth wing and it’d be hard for Yarros to deny any kind of inspiration from this book. Quite honestly, if you take away the smut and dragons out of fourth wing you have a pretty similar book and plot. But in my opinion Sabaa Tahir did it best. Both of the main characters Laia and Elias you’re rooting for, you want them to be able to overcome their oppression. They just want their freedom in corrupt society. One being a slave and the other damn near royalty. The savagery of the empire will have you mourning alongside our two main characters. But I found my heart hurting for those caught in the cross hair of the empire’s thirst for power. It’s a brutal book with themes of slavery, sexual assault, murder, child abuse and death. I highly highly recommend for the epic story. I have high expectations for the remaining three books for this series!

... Read moreWhen I first picked up 'An Ember in the Ashes,' the book cover itself drew me in—that striking red background with the bold black title and the magnificent golden creature, almost like a lion, captured my imagination instantly. It truly sets the tone for the epic fantasy world Sabaa Tahir creates. One of the reasons this book resonated so much with me is the incredible depth of its characters. Laia, a Scholar slave fighting for her family's freedom, and Elias, a Mask about to graduate from the brutal Blackcliff Military Academy, both carry such immense burdens. I found myself rooting for them equally, caught between their desperate quests for freedom within a truly oppressive Empire. Their individual journeys are heartbreakingly personal yet universally relatable. Elias's internal conflict, torn between duty and his conscience, felt so real. And Laia's quiet strength, her resilience in the face of unspeakable cruelty, made her an incredibly compelling protagonist. It's not just about their fight against the system, but also their struggle to maintain their humanity in a world designed to strip it away. You'll also encounter formidable figures like the Commandant and the mysterious Nightbringer, who add layers of intrigue and danger to the narrative. This isn't your lighthearted fantasy. As the original review mentioned, 'An Ember in the Ashes' dives deep into brutal themes like slavery, oppression, and the dark side of power. It's a true 'dark fantasy' that doesn't shy away from depicting violence and injustice, but it always serves the story and highlights the characters' fight for hope. The world-building is intricate, drawing inspiration from ancient Rome, and it feels incredibly lived-in and dangerous. The genre truly is a masterclass in high-stakes, character-driven fantasy. For those who love audiobooks, I can imagine 'An Ember in the Ashes' would be an incredibly immersive experience. The powerful storytelling and emotional weight of the narrative would truly come alive through a skilled narrator. It’s the kind of story that would keep you on the edge of your seat during commutes or workouts, making every chapter feel like a pivotal moment. Given the rich lore and compelling plot, it’s no surprise that many readers, like me, wonder about future adaptations or similar works. While there isn't a 'Chinese drama' specifically, the universal themes of rebellion against tyranny and forbidden love are staples in many global narratives, including some Asian historical dramas. It speaks to the story's broad appeal that people are even searching for such adaptations. The four-book series also promises an even grander scale, with characters like The Nightbringer playing crucial roles as the story unfolds, deepening the mythology and stakes significantly. And yes, the comparison to 'Fourth Wing' is inevitable due to the military academy setting and high stakes, but 'An Ember in the Ashes' stands firmly on its own with its unique blend of gritty realism and profound emotional depth.
