Books I’m convinced people are lying about liking

2025/6/19 Edited to

... Read moreIt’s a common feeling among book lovers: you pick up a massively popular book, one that everyone on BookTok or in your book club is raving about, only to find yourself scratching your head. You finish it, and while you might appreciate aspects of it, you just don't get the universal adoration. It makes you wonder, are people truly loving these books, or are we all just a little bit guilty of exaggerating our enthusiasm to fit in? I've definitely felt this way about several titles, and it's refreshing to know I'm not alone in having some truly unpopular book opinions. Take, for instance, the Young Adult (YA) genre. The OCR mentioned how some books, like 'The Inheritance Games' or 'Binding,' might have been better if they weren't YA. I totally get this! Sometimes, a story has incredible potential, a unique premise, or intriguing characters, but certain YA tropes can make it feel a bit underdeveloped or cliché for an older audience. The pacing might be different, or the dilemmas might feel less complex than they could be. It's not about disliking YA altogether, but rather feeling that a narrative could have blossomed even more fully with a different approach to its target demographic. It often leaves me thinking, 'This could have been so much more!' Then there are the books that everyone claims are the 'best book they've ever read' – titles like 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo' or 'Better Than The Movies,' which are frequently lauded. While I respect their appeal, sometimes the hype creates such high expectations that anything less than perfection can feel like a letdown. It’s hard to have an honest ‘like vs dislike book reviews comparison’ when the general consensus is so overwhelmingly positive. I wonder if there's a secret animosity bubbling under the surface for some of these, where people are afraid to voice their true feelings. Are we reading the same book, or are we just swept up in the collective enthusiasm? And let's not forget the 'spicy' books or romance novels that come with a massive following, like the mention of 'Pucking Around' and its multi-hockey-player romance. While a good romance can be incredibly captivating, some popular ones fall into 'most hated book cliches.' Instant love, overly dramatic misunderstandings, or characters who feel like archetypes rather than real people can make a story feel predictable and less impactful. There’s a fine line between a beloved trope and a cliché that makes you roll your eyes. It’s okay to admit when a book, even a popular one, doesn’t quite hit the mark for you because it leans too heavily on these well-worn paths. Ultimately, it's about genuine enjoyment. It's okay to not love every book that everyone else does. Our tastes are subjective, and what one person considers a masterpiece, another might find mediocre. So, let’s be brave and share those 'one of us is lying book' moments, where we feel like we're the only ones who didn't fall head over heels. What popular books are you secretly convinced people are lying about liking? I'd love to hear your honest (and perhaps unpopular!) thoughts!
