Change of Pace - book review!
This book was so refreshing! Not only is Jesse a plus-size girly, but she’s also a Kawasaki disease survivor. I had no idea what this disease was before reading, and I really enjoyed learning about it through Jesse and her struggle.
I also loved seeing a girl who has real obstacles in her life face them head-on. After her second heart attack, she decided to make a bucket list to make the most of the time she had left. Even though she had always wanted to meet someone special and fall in love, she didn’t think that was fair to someone else now, with all her health issues. She just wanted to have fun while she still could—just casual fun, like a one-night stand with someone she met at a bar.
She met Asher at a bar right after her friend ditched her to hook up with the bartender. He was cute, charming, funny, and really into her, so she figured—why not? They had an amazing night together, and she planned to leave it at that. Then she learned that he was, in fact, her best friend’s brother.
After seeing him again at a wedding-related function the next day, she was convinced to go on a month-long road trip with him—as just friends—to check off her bucket list before starting her new job. Friends worked for a while, but Asher always wanted more. He had to work hard to show Jesse that she was worth loving, in spite of her disease.
Between Asher’s charm and Gus’s cuteness, they eventually helped her see how amazing and capable she really is—and how worthy of love and life she truly is.
This book was toned down on the spicy scale compared to most of Kayla’s books, but it was so worth it for the heartfelt story between these two people. I loved this book. I highly recommend it! #booktok #bookstagram #newbook #bookreview #plussizeromance
After diving into 'Change of Pace' by Kayla Grosse, I felt compelled to share even more about why this book resonated so deeply with me. It’s not just another romance; it’s a powerful narrative wrapped in a love story that truly sticks with you long after the final page. What immediately struck me was Jesse, our incredible protagonist. In a genre often filled with similar character molds, Jesse stands out. She’s a plus-size woman, unapologetically herself, and navigating life with a serious health condition – Kawasaki disease. Before reading, I honestly didn't know much about Kawasaki disease, and the way Kayla Grosse weaves Jesse’s struggles and triumphs with it into the story is incredibly educational and empathetic. It’s rare to see such a nuanced portrayal of chronic illness in romance, and it made Jesse's journey of self-acceptance and finding love feel incredibly real and impactful. This isn't just about finding a partner; it's about finding yourself and your worth, even when life throws its toughest challenges. It truly explores what it means to be 'living a happy life' on your own terms. The heart of the story lies in Jesse's decision to create a bucket list after a second heart attack. This isn't a morbid undertaking, but a vibrant declaration to live fully. Her initial plan for casual fun takes an unexpected turn when she meets Asher. Oh, Asher! He’s charming, persistent, and sees Jesse for who she is, not just her circumstances. Their dynamic is layered and beautiful, especially as he patiently helps her dismantle the walls she’s built around her heart, convincing her that she is absolutely worthy of love and happiness, health issues notwithstanding. This kind of deep emotional connection is what elevates 'Change of Pace' beyond a simple romance. The idea of them embarking on a month-long road trip to tick off her bucket list, initially as 'just friends,' was such a delightful premise. It allowed their relationship to develop organically amidst new experiences and challenges, really showcasing their chemistry. I particularly loved the subtle details, like the mention of a cat (perhaps one on the charming book cover I saw!) that adds another layer of warmth to their budding connection. For anyone who’s been searching for a romance that offers more than just spicy scenes – though it has its moments! – 'Change of Pace' delivers profoundly. It champions body positivity, resilience, and the idea that love doesn't just conquer all, but it also sees and cherishes all. This book earned its 5-star rating from me because it’s a testament to hope, courage, and the transformative power of genuine connection. If you're looking for a book that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer for its characters, then 'Change of Pace' by Kayla Grosse should absolutely be your next read. It’s a change of pace from the usual, in the best possible way, and a beautiful story about two people finding their way together.
