Simple enough, right? It's essentially your personal list or stack of books you intend to read next. For many of us book lovers, this list can grow at an alarming rate, often faster than we can read! While a 'TBR stack' might conjure images of meticulously organized shelves, for a long time, mine looked more like a chaotic pile of random books on the floor, leaving me completely overwhelmed. As a self-proclaimed mood reader, I used to really struggle with my TBR. I'd buy books based on hype or a fleeting interest, add them to the ever-growing stack, and then when it came time to actually pick something up, my mood had completely shifted. Sound familiar? I'd stare at my enormous collection of books, paralyzed by choice, and often end up re-reading an old favorite or doom-scrolling instead of diving into something new. This isn't what a TBR is meant to be! It's supposed to be a source of excitement, not stress. That's why I had to totally rethink my approach. My biggest game-changer was moving away from the idea of an endless, unmanageable queue. Instead, I now carefully select around 10 books that I'm truly, genuinely excited to read that month or season. This isn't a rigid rule, but more of a guiding principle. These 10 books become my current 'TBR stack' – physically or mentally. The key is to choose books that genuinely pique your interest *in that moment*, rather than just adding every new release. It's about getting a vibe for each book and truly getting invested in its storyline before it even leaves the shelf. How do I pick these magical *10 books*? I look for variety! Maybe one fantasy, a cozy mystery, a thought-provoking non-fiction, and a romance. This way, no matter what mood strikes me, I have an exciting option ready to go. If I'm feeling stressed, I can reach for that lighthearted romance. If I'm curious, the non-fiction is waiting. I also make sure these are books I've been eyeing for a while, books that have strong recommendations, or ones that fit a current reading challenge. The OCR mentioned 'books sitting on the shelves' – for me, this means my main library, but my active TBR is those selected few, ready to be picked up. Another tip: don't be afraid to adjust! If, after a few chapters, one of your 10 books just isn't gelling with your mood, it's okay to swap it out for another one from your wider collection. The goal is enjoyment, not forced completion. The original article mentioned 'getting invested in the storyline,' and by having a smaller, curated selection, it’s much easier to do that without feeling like you're cheating on a massive list. Once I finish a book, I simply choose a new one from my wider collection to replenish my active *TBR stack*. This method has totally transformed my reading life, making my 'to be read' list a source of joy and accomplishment instead of an intimidating chore. Happy reading, everyone!
