Three siblings are finally forced to confront the horrors of the house in which they grew up in this paranormal, ghostly mystery from Simone St. James.
Simone St. James’ storytelling is absolutely captivating, and every time I picked up this book, I was excited to flip through the chapters and read from Violet, Vail, and Dodie’s perspectives. The build-up to the reveal as to what was truly going on in the house was fascinating, and I especially enjoyed the scenes in which Charlotte was around and trying to help the siblings find out the truth. There was something eerie about it all, and I couldn’t help but pray that I didn’t start having my own nightmares someday about the house I live in. Yet I felt like the “final battle” - so to speak - was anticlimactic and didn’t give justice to the growing fear and tension that had been happening for the first 85% of the book. Overall though, I was super engrossed in the story, and I would recommend checking it out!

As someone who adores a good paranormal mystery, diving into 'A Box Full of Darkness' was an experience I was really looking forward to. What immediately struck me, even before I started reading, was the promise of a classic Haunted House tale intertwined with deep-seated Family Trauma. Simone St. James masterfully sets the stage, making the house itself feel like a character, brimming with unsettling history and secrets that the three siblings – Violet, Vail, and Dodie – are forced to confront as adults. The novel doesn't just rely on jump scares; it builds its dread through a palpable sense of unease. The Ghost Mystery unfolds slowly, piece by chilling piece, keeping me guessing about what truly happened within those walls. I found the way the author handles the psychological impact of growing up in such an environment particularly compelling. It’s not just about what goes bump in the night, but how past events, left unaddressed, can haunt a family for decades. The siblings' individual struggles and their collective history create a rich emotional backdrop that makes the supernatural elements even more impactful. One of the standout features for me was the use of Multiple POVs. Shifting between Violet, Vail, and Dodie's perspectives allowed for a layered understanding of their shared trauma and their differing interpretations of the haunting. It added so much depth, showing how each character grappled with their memories and the present dangers. It's a clever technique that really immerses you in their individual fears and hopes, while slowly piecing together the larger puzzle. Charlotte's role in helping them unravel the truth was especially intriguing, providing an outsider's perspective that felt both supportive and a little eerie. While the initial build-up of suspense and the exploration of these themes were absolutely captivating, making it hard to put the book down, the resolution of the mystery felt… different from what I anticipated. Sometimes, with intense thrillers like this, the journey of discovering the truth is so meticulously crafted that the ultimate reveal can feel like a sudden drop after a long, steep climb. However, the overall atmosphere and the deep dive into the characters' lives made it a worthwhile read for any fan of the genre. If you're drawn to stories where a house holds as many secrets as its inhabitants, and you appreciate a blend of Family Trauma, a compelling Ghost Mystery, and the unsettling atmosphere of a Haunted House, then 'A Box Full of Darkness' is definitely one to consider. For those who enjoy Simone St. James's style, or authors like Shirley Jackson and Sarah Lotz, this book could be your next spooky obsession. Always remember to check content warnings, especially for intense reads like this, to ensure you're prepared for the emotional journey.
