Fourth Wing
Fourth Wing was a DNF for me this year and I won’t be picking it back up any time soon.
Okay, so I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, especially with how much buzz 'Fourth Wing' by Rebecca Yarros has generated. It’s been hailed as the instant Sunday Times and number one global bestselling phenomenon, and honestly, I went into it with incredibly high hopes. Everywhere I looked, it was blowing up on social media, promising an epic dragon rider romance with thrilling action and a captivating world. Like many, I was eager to dive into what everyone else was raving about. However, despite all the hype, 'Fourth Wing' was a definite DNF (Did Not Finish) for me this year, and I honestly don't see myself picking it back up anytime soon. I kept pushing through, trying to understand what I was missing, but I just couldn't connect with it. It felt like the story insisted upon itself rather than drawing me in naturally. One of my biggest struggles was with the pacing. While some might find the relentless action exciting, I found it a bit overwhelming and, at times, rushed. It felt like plot point after plot point was thrown at me without enough breathing room for character development or deeper world-building. I appreciate a fast-paced read, but I also need moments to truly immerse myself in the setting and grow to care about the characters. For me, Rebecca Yarros's approach here left me feeling disconnected. The characters, particularly the protagonist, also didn't quite resonate with me. Despite the high stakes and dramatic situations, I struggled to fully empathize with their journey or believe in some of their rapid developments. I found myself questioning motivations and feeling a lack of genuine emotional depth that I typically crave in a fantasy romance. I wanted to root for them, to feel their triumphs and struggles, but instead, I just felt a growing indifference. And while the concept of dragons and a war college is undeniably cool, the execution didn't quite hit the mark for me personally. I felt the world-building, while present, didn't always feel as rich or as deeply explored as I'd hoped for in a fantasy novel of this scale. It had all the ingredients for something spectacular, but the blend just didn't work for my palate. I truly understand why 'Fourth Wing' has captivated so many readers and become such a massive hit. It clearly offers exactly what a lot of people are looking for in their fantasy reads, especially with its viral popularity. But for me, I have to admit, I simply *did not care for Fourth Wing*. It's a tough feeling when a book everyone loves just doesn't click with you. I'm always open to different opinions, though! If you loved it, tell me what made it special for you. And if you also DNF'd, I'd love to hear your thoughts too!
