Visiting Shakespeare and Co.

#ThingsToDo #lemon8challenge #paris #shakespeareandco #books

I’ve been hearing a lot about how I needed to visit the book store Shakespeare and Company in Paris. I was worried because there has been an uptick in popularity so wasn’t sure if I wanted to wait in line.

I had about an hour to kill before the store closed and I am so glad I waited in line! It went by super quickly and I got to bring home a book and a journal.

French is not my native tongue, so I loved that there was a book store where I could bring home something I could cherish (and understand hehe).

They had so many genres and sections to just sit and read. For film lovers this has been a location in many iconic movies (Before Sunrise to name one).

Definitely try and visit if you come across it.

... Read moreShakespeare and Company is more than just a bookstore; it is a historic cultural landmark nestled in the heart of Paris near the Seine River and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Founded in 1951 by George Whitman, it carries on the legacy of the original store created by Sylvia Beach in 1919. The bookstore has become a sanctuary for book lovers worldwide, offering a unique blend of old and new literature in multiple languages, making it accessible to visitors who do not speak French. Visitors to Shakespeare and Company can enjoy more than just purchasing books. The store’s layout encourages exploration, with cozy nooks and seating areas where readers can immerse themselves in various genres — from classic literature and poetry to contemporary works and rare finds. This environment fosters a sense of community, often hosting readings, events, and workshops that celebrate the literary arts. The phrase "Pack your phone and let the books work their magic" resonates throughout the bookstore, emphasizing the escape and inspiration that books provide in our digital age. This message is echoed in the bookstore's ambiance, where patrons are encouraged to disconnect and fully experience the joy of reading. Additionally, Shakespeare and Company has been featured in numerous films, including the well-known movie "Before Sunrise," highlighting its cultural significance and charm. For travelers seeking authentic Parisian experiences, stopping by this bookstore offers both literary enrichment and a glimpse into Paris’s artistic heritage. If you plan to visit, be aware that the store's popularity can lead to lines, but the wait is often short and well worth it. Bringing home a book or journal from Shakespeare and Company offers a meaningful souvenir that captures the spirit of Parisian literary culture. Whether you’re a casual visitor or a devoted bibliophile, Shakespeare and Company welcomes all to savor the magic of books in the City of Light.
