Writing advice I ignore every time I write ✨

There’s a lot of writing advice online and not all of it is helpful.

Here’s the advice I’ve learned to ignore:

• You don’t have to write every single day.

Consistency matters. Guilt doesn’t.

• You don’t have to outline everything first.

Some stories need space before structure.

• You don’t need to follow what’s trending.

Trends fade. Voice lasts.

• Writing feeling hard doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

Hard usually means you’re close.

• You don’t need confidence to start.

Confidence comes after you begin.

If you’ve been writing and feeling behind or unsure of yourself, save this.

There’s no single “right” way to create.

... Read moreFrom my own experience as a writer, I've found that the common writing advice often doesn’t fit everyone’s creative process. For example, the suggestion that you must write every day can sometimes feel stifling. Instead, I focus on consistency over daily output, which helps me avoid guilt when life gets busy but still keeps my momentum going. Outlining feels restrictive for me because some stories unfold naturally only when given space to breathe. Allowing myself that freedom makes the writing process more organic, and sometimes the best ideas come mid-draft rather than from strict planning. Trends in writing and genres come and go, but what remains constant is your unique voice. I've learned to resist chasing trends because prioritizing my authentic style builds a lasting connection with readers. Also, writing can often feel difficult or uncomfortable. Rather than seeing this as a sign of failure, I've realized that struggle usually means I'm pushing boundaries or getting closer to a breakthrough—a crucial insight that keeps me going through writer’s block. Lastly, beginning without confidence might seem counterintuitive, but I've discovered that confidence follows action. Starting a project, even with doubt, helps build momentum and belief in my work. If you often feel behind or unsure, remember there is no single right way to create. Embrace your process and stay true to your voice.
