Excuse the mirror y’all
How do you keep a curled silk press on short hair? Cause that’s my struggle rn. #silkpresscurls #silk press #shortnaturalhair #curlsss
Okay, so who else feels my pain? Getting a gorgeous curled silk press on short hair is one thing, but making those curls actually *last*? That's the real challenge! I've tried so many things, and honestly, it can feel like a losing battle against humidity and gravity. But I've picked up a few tricks along the way, and I'd love to share what’s helped me, and hear what works for you! First off, preparation is everything. I've learned that a good foundation makes a huge difference. Before I even think about heat, I make sure my hair is super clean and moisturized. Using a clarifying shampoo followed by a deep conditioner really preps the strands. I've even heard about people using a DIY 'Silk Press Tea' blend as a rinse or pre-treatment, packed with strengthening ingredients, to give the hair extra elasticity and shine, which I think helps with curl retention. It’s like giving your hair a protective boost! When it comes to curling technique, I've found that patience is key. For short hair, using smaller sections when flat ironing or curling definitely helps. After I create a curl with my flat iron, I immediately pin that curl up to cool in place. This allows the curl to set properly. Don't touch it until it's completely cool! If you brush it out warm, it just falls flat. I also use a lightweight heat protectant, but I avoid anything too heavy or oily beforehand, as it can weigh down the curls. Product choice post-press also makes a huge impact. I lightly mist a flexible hold hairspray after the curls have cooled and been gently finger-combed. Avoid heavy serums or oils directly on the curls if you want them to last. They can make your hair revert or lose its bounce quickly. For shine, a very tiny amount of a lightweight finishing oil applied to your hands and then gently smoothed over the hair works best, focusing on the ends. And for the ultimate challenge: nighttime maintenance! This is where most of my curls used to disappear. I’ve found that loosely gathering my hair (if it’s long enough) into a “pineapple” on top of my head, or even just doing a few loose, large pin curls, then covering it with a silk bonnet or scarf, is essential. The silk prevents friction and helps maintain the smoothness and curl pattern. Sleeping directly on your curls is a no-go! Finally, for day-to-day refreshing, if a curl starts to fall, I might touch it up with a small flat iron on a low setting. I also use a dry shampoo at my roots if I feel any oiliness, as that can also contribute to curls dropping. A light mist of anti-humidity spray can also be a lifesaver on those damp days. It’s all about protecting your hard work! What are your go-to tips for keeping those bouncy silk press curls on point for days?
