Start a Print-on-Demand Business with Zero Inventory

Looking for a side hustle that doesn’t require a huge upfront investment? Try Print-on-Demand (POD)! Whether you’re a designer or just have an eye for cool trends, POD lets you sell custom-designed products without holding inventory.

But how should one get started? A lot of people had questions in an earlier post of mine, so here’s what I found to get started:

Step 1: Choose Your Niche 🎯

Pick a niche that you’re passionate about. It could be fitness gear, motivational quotes, or cute pet accessories. Focusing on a niche helps you stand out from the competition.

Step 2: Create Designs 🎨

If you’re artistic, use platforms like Canva or Adobe Spark to create designs. Even if you’re not a designer, you can hire freelancers on Fiverr or Upwork for affordable, high-quality work. Pro tip: Research what’s trending on sites like Etsy to find inspiration. As for copyright, this is up to you to research to protect yourself. Never take another artist’s designs. They are there to make money too! But if you niche is Star Wars and you want a famous quote on a coffee mug, go for it. Heck, even check out Pinterest for fun spin quotes that can make a laugh out of a well known quote or film.

Step 3: Find a POD Supplier 🏷️

Platforms like Printful, Redbubble, or Teespring allow you to upload your designs and sell them on products like T-shirts, mugs, or phone cases. They handle the printing, shipping, and even customer service, so you can focus on marketing! These are just a few, but you can definitely research some more to find what best works for you!

Step 4: Set Up Your Store 🛒

Connect your POD supplier to an e-commerce platform like Shopify or Etsy. Customize your store with your branding, add product descriptions, and be sure to include high-quality mockups to attract customers.

Step 5: Market Your Products 📢

Now it’s time to… SHOP!!! Make your socials your best friend with this gig! Share your designs on Instagram, TikTok, and even Lemon8. Consider influencer marketing or running Facebook ads to reach your target audience. Leverage this and ads to drive traffic and make sales!

📌 Bonus Tip: Use tools like Google Trends or Pinterest to keep an eye on rising trends. By staying on top of what’s popular, you can update your designs to match consumer demand. Pinterest has been something that I’ve always used for personal inspo like style and such (IMO, it’s like a virtual Target and pls if anyone feels the same, comment below so I know I’m not alone 😂), but it can be a great tool for keeping up with the latest trends… maybe even create a new account to avoid messing with your current accounts algorithms. As for Google Trends, this is something that I’m going to start TODAY no doubt.
