Designs 👉🏽 Dollars: a Print-On-Demand side hustle
Weekly Side Hustle Tips 💡💻:
Start a Print-on-Demand Business with Zero Inventory
Looking for a side hustle that doesn’t require a huge upfront investment? Try Print-on-Demand (POD)! Whether you’re a designer or just have an eye for cool trends, POD lets you sell custom-designed products without holding inventory.
But how should one get started? A lot of people had questions in an earlier post of mine, so here’s what I found to get started:
Step 1: Choose Your Niche 🎯
Pick a niche that you’re passionate about. It could be fitness gear, motivational quotes, or cute pet accessories. Focusing on a niche helps you stand out from the competition.
Step 2: Create Designs 🎨
If you’re artistic, use platforms like Canva or Adobe Spark to create designs. Even if you’re not a designer, you can hire freelancers on Fiverr or Upwork for affordable, high-quality work. Pro tip: Research what’s trending on sites like Etsy to find inspiration. As for copyright, this is up to you to research to protect yourself. Never take another artist’s designs. They are there to make money too! But if you niche is Star Wars and you want a famous quote on a coffee mug, go for it. Heck, even check out Pinterest for fun spin quotes that can make a laugh out of a well known quote or film.
Step 3: Find a POD Supplier 🏷️
Platforms like Printful, Redbubble, or Teespring allow you to upload your designs and sell them on products like T-shirts, mugs, or phone cases. They handle the printing, shipping, and even customer service, so you can focus on marketing! These are just a few, but you can definitely research some more to find what best works for you!
Step 4: Set Up Your Store 🛒
Connect your POD supplier to an e-commerce platform like Shopify or Etsy. Customize your store with your branding, add product descriptions, and be sure to include high-quality mockups to attract customers.
Step 5: Market Your Products 📢
Now it’s time to… SHOP!!! Make your socials your best friend with this gig! Share your designs on Instagram, TikTok, and even Lemon8. Consider influencer marketing or running Facebook ads to reach your target audience. Leverage this and ads to drive traffic and make sales!
📌 Bonus Tip: Use tools like Google Trends or Pinterest to keep an eye on rising trends. By staying on top of what’s popular, you can update your designs to match consumer demand. Pinterest has been something that I’ve always used for personal inspo like style and such (IMO, it’s like a virtual Target and pls if anyone feels the same, comment below so I know I’m not alone 😂), but it can be a great tool for keeping up with the latest trends… maybe even create a new account to avoid messing with your current accounts algorithms. As for Google Trends, this is something that I’m going to start TODAY no doubt.
I really hope this helps! I believe in all of you… and remember… winter is coming… and that means gift season. We loveeee giving those thoughtful gifts, so now is the time to get out there to both start and jumpstart your store!

Hey everyone! So glad you're looking into starting a Print-on-Demand side hustle. When I first dived into this, I was looking for ways to make some extra cash without the headache of inventory, and POD really delivered on that "no inventory costs" promise. It’s truly amazing how you can start generating a "steady $1000-$3000 monthly" once you get the hang of it! Let's dig a little deeper into those steps, because I’ve definitely learned a few things along the way that I wish I knew earlier. When it comes to Choosing Your Niche, don't just pick something you like. Try validating it! I started by checking out Etsy’s best-sellers and looking at trending searches on Google Trends, just like the article mentioned. For instance, instead of just "pet accessories," I narrowed it down to "funny cat lover mugs" because I saw a huge demand for witty, relatable pet humor. It helps you stand out from the crowd and attract specific buyers. For Creating Designs, if you’re not a graphic designer like me, don’t fret! Beyond platforms like Canva, I’ve found some fantastic free resources. Sites like Pexels or Unsplash offer free-to-use images for commercial purposes (always double-check licenses!). You can take these, add some catchy text using Canva's free fonts, and create unique designs. And a huge tip on copyright: even if you love Star Wars, be super careful with direct quotes or images unless they’re public domain or you have explicit permission. Instead, think about inspired phrases or concepts that evoke the same feeling without infringing. Next up, Finding a POD Supplier. The article mentions Printful and Redbubble, which are great starting points. I personally use Printful because their integration with Shopify was super smooth, and their product quality has been consistently good. But definitely explore! Look at their product range (do they have the t-shirts, hoodies, phone cases you want?), printing quality samples, and shipping times. Getting a sample product of your own design is a must to check quality before you sell to customers. It's a small investment that builds huge trust. Setting Up Your Store isn't just about uploading designs. Think about your product descriptions! Don't just list features; sell the *feeling*. Who is this product for? What problem does it solve or what joy does it bring? Use keywords related to your niche to help people find you. And for mockups, there are tons of free mockup generators online that let you place your designs on realistic product photos, making your store look professional without needing a photoshoot. Finally, Marketing Your Products is where the magic happens. Beyond Instagram and TikTok, consider Pinterest not just for trends but as a visual search engine. Create beautiful pins featuring your products with strong calls to action linking directly to your store. I've seen amazing results by creating idea boards around my niche (e.g., "Gift Ideas for Cat Lovers") and subtly including my products. Running small, targeted Facebook or Instagram ads with a clear offer can also be a game-changer once you have a few designs that are performing well. Remember, consistency is key – keep posting, keep engaging, and keep an eye on those trends using tools like Google Trends! It’s all about getting your wonderful designs in front of the right people to help you truly build that print-on-demand side hustle into a thriving income stream.
