Mexican shows for Spanish learners!

If you are learning Spanish, and especially Mexican Spanish, here are a few shows you can watch! Just a warning that these are soap operas and have a lot of drama/melodrama in them!

MI CORAZÓN ES TUYO: ⭐️ 3.5/5 A little too much drama for me. Growing up I really liked this show but the more I grew up the more annoying some characters seem!

SORTILEGIO: ⭐️ 3/5 My mom loves this show but once again, this is very dramatic! There are actually some biphobic comments made by characters in the show so here’s a warning!

VENCER EL PASADO: ⭐️ 3.25/5 I love the concept of empowering women and learning to be up to date and careful with technology. However, I cannot get over the terrible outro song. And at some point this show seems to focus more on the male characters for a while before shifting back to the women as protagonists.

... Read moreSo, you've decided to dive into the dramatic world of Mexican telenovelas to level up your Spanish? ¡Excelente decisión! From my own journey, I can tell you that these shows are pure gold for language learners, especially if you're targeting Mexican Spanish. Beyond just the fun stories, there's a real method to how they can help you improve. First off, why are telenovelas so effective? Think about it: the dialogue is often clear, slightly exaggerated, and full of repetition. This isn't a bug; it's a feature! That repetition helps new vocabulary and common phrases really sink in. Plus, the high emotional stakes mean you get a lot of context for words and expressions. You're not just memorizing; you're feeling the language, which makes it much more memorable. Here are my personal tips on how to get the most out of your telenovela binge for Spanish learning: Start with Subtitles (Wisely!): When I first started, I'd watch with Spanish subtitles on. This helped me connect the sounds I was hearing with the written words. Once I felt more comfortable with a particular show or scene, I'd try watching it again without any subtitles. It’s challenging, but so rewarding when you start picking up more! Avoid English subtitles if you can, as it's too easy to just read and not listen. Embrace the Rewind Button: Don't be shy about replaying a confusing line or an interesting phrase. Sometimes I'd rewind a scene two or three times just to catch a specific idiom or a rapid-fire exchange. That's how you train your ear! Keep a Telenovela Notebook: Seriously, grab a small notebook or use a note-taking app. When you hear a new word, a cool slang term, or a useful phrase, jot it down. You can pause the show, look it up quickly, and then continue. Later, you can review your "telenovela dictionary." For example, in shows like Mi Corazón Es Tuyo or Sortilegio (which you can often find on platforms like Vix.com), you'll encounter a rich vocabulary related to family, love, betrayal, and everyday life in Mexico. Focus on the Gist First: Especially for beginners, it's easy to get overwhelmed trying to understand every single word. Don't! My advice is to focus on understanding the main plot, the character's emotions, and the overall context. You'll be surprised how much you can grasp without knowing every word. The visual cues in telenovelas are super helpful for this! Don't Be Afraid of the Drama! Yes, as I mentioned in my reviews, these shows are full of drama. But that exaggerated reality often makes the language easier to follow. The emotions are clear, the intentions are obvious, and the plot twists keep you engaged, which is crucial for staying motivated when learning a language. Whether it's a dramatic reveal or a heartfelt confession, these moments are often spoken clearly and with emphasis. If you're wondering which shows are good, beyond the ones I've reviewed, look for popular Mexican telenovela recommendations for people learning Mexican Spanish. Many older shows are fantastic because they tend to have clearer dialogue. While I mainly focused on Vix.com titles, don't forget to check streaming giants like Netflix – they often have a great selection of Spanish-language series, even if not all are classic telenovelas. Look for shows marketed as "romantic Mexican telenovelas" if that's your vibe, or "Spanish shows to watch for beginners" if you need something a little gentler to start. Remember, the goal is immersion and consistent exposure. Happy watching, and happy learning!
