How Much To Budget for 3Wks in Spain & Portugal 💸
My partner and I take 1-2 big trips a year, usually during shoulder season - we’re not fans of traveling during the summer plus the crowds are always crazy. And being that we live (relatively) far away from everywhere else in the world, we try to make the most of each by spending at least 2-3 weeks in one area.
🛫 Everything was booked 4-5 months ahead
🛫 Return flight costs from LA (~$800) not included in the price on the photo
🛫 We’re more boutique travelers who usually account for 1-2 fancy meals, nice hotels & and airbnbs, and avoid group tours as possible
Did the total surprise you? Let me know if you have questions :)

Dreaming of a memorable 3-week adventure through Spain and Portugal but worried about the cost? My partner and I just returned from an incredible journey, and I’m excited to share how we balanced a 'boutique traveler' experience with a realistic budget. We truly believe you don't have to sacrifice comfort or unique experiences to stay within your means. Here's a deeper dive into how we managed our finances, offering practical tips for your own Iberian escapade! Accommodation: Smart Stays for Boutique Vibes As the largest chunk of our budget (around 47.6%), accommodations were key. We opted for a mix of charming boutique hotels and cozy Airbnbs. My top tip? Book well in advance—we secured most of our stays 4-5 months out, especially since we travel during shoulder season to avoid peak prices and crowds. Look for places slightly off the main tourist drag; you often find better value and more authentic experiences. We loved staying in a beautifully tiled apartment in Lisbon and a renovated guesthouse near the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Using filters for 'superhost' or 'boutique' on booking sites helped us find quality without luxury hotel prices. Sometimes, selecting an Airbnb with a kitchen allowed us to save on breakfast and a few dinners, which added up significantly. Meals: Budget-Friendly Feasting & Indulgences Food was our second largest expense (24.1%), but oh, was it worth it! Spain and Portugal are culinary delights. To manage costs, we embraced various strategies. For budget-friendly feasting in Spanish cities, we swore by the 'menú del dÃa' for lunch—a multi-course meal at an unbeatable price. Exploring local markets for fresh produce, cheeses, and hams was a fantastic way to create delicious, affordable picnics or meals back at our Airbnb. We also indulged in plenty of tapas in Spain and petiscos in Portugal, hopping between bars for small, flavorful bites. For our occasional splurges, like a Michelin-starred meal or a guided food tour, we factored these in as special experiences. Don't shy away from street food and local bakeries; Portuguese pastries alone are worth the trip! Transportation: Navigating Nimbly Our 14.8% transportation budget covered quite a bit: 3 local flights, 2 regional trains, and 1 long bus ride. Booking domestic flights within Spain and Portugal in advance, especially with budget airlines, can be surprisingly affordable. For inter-city travel, trains in Spain (like the high-speed AVE) and Portugal are efficient and comfortable, offering scenic views. Buses are often the most economical option for shorter routes or less popular destinations. We also made extensive use of public transport within cities – walking, metros, and trams are excellent ways to explore. For instance, the historic trams in Lisbon are an experience in themselves, and a great way to see the city for cheap! Attractions & Activities: Curated Experiences (6.9%) This budget category included entry fees to historical sites, museums, and specific tours. We prioritized a few key attractions, like exploring the intricate Moorish architecture of the Alhambra or visiting the iconic Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Look into city passes if you plan on seeing many paid attractions—they can offer savings and convenience. We balanced these with plenty of free activities: strolling through charming neighborhoods, enjoying vibrant plazas, hiking coastal paths, and admiring unique elements like the colorful Portuguese tiles found across cities such as Porto and Lisbon. We also set aside a small amount for FOREX (5.1%) to cover currency exchange fees and any small cash purchases, always keeping an eye on our bank's international transaction fees. Shopping & Souvenirs: Our shopping budget was minimal, focusing on small, meaningful souvenirs rather than extensive purchases. Think local handicrafts, a bottle of regional wine or olive oil, or a piece of unique pottery. It’s all about bringing home a piece of the experience, not just a trinket. By planning ahead, being flexible, and embracing local customs, you can absolutely enjoy a fulfilling and memorable 3-week trip to Spain and Portugal without overspending. It’s about making smart choices that align with your travel style and priorities!

What did you mean when describing your return flight cost? By LA did you mean Los Angeles?
