Casa Gilardi is nice and all but….. 😬

Casa Gilardi is undoubtedly the most instagrammable Luis Barragan work - and interestingly it was designed for this purpose, 50 years ahead of its time.

This was also the most EXPENSIVE entry we paid (Mxn$600 per person!) which is kind of wild especially for people who might not be that interested in Luis Barragan’s work.

This yellow corridor has long been on my list though and I’m glad I finally crossed it off my list!

Casa Gilardi

Calle Gral. Antonio León 82, San Miguel Chapultepec I Secc, Miguel Hidalgo, 11850 Ciudad de México, CDMX, Mexico

💛 Entry Tickets: Mxn$600/person, paid in cash at the end of the tour. To book, you must send them an email and wait for their confirmation.

💛 Photography Permit: Photos allowed, but mobile cameras only

💛 Expect to see: Luis Barragan’s last masterpiece, the culmination of his work. We had access to 2 floors and outdoor areas, but not the 3rd level (the family still lives here).

This was definitely good for a one time visit - I imagine the entry will just keep going higher from here! Is this on your list??

... Read moreWalking into Casa Gilardi, I was immediately drawn to that famous yellow corridor. It’s even more striking in person than in pictures! The way the natural light filters through, creating a warm, almost ethereal glow, truly makes it an experience. It’s not just a hallway; it's a journey into Barragán's mastery of light and shadow, truly designed for a moment of quiet contemplation, even if it's now an Instagram hotspot. I spent a good amount of time just appreciating how the color shifted with the moving clouds outside. Then there’s the incredible interior pool. I was captivated by the interplay of the deep blue water against the vibrant red wall – a design choice that really pops and leaves a lasting impression. It's a serene space, and you can almost feel the calmness Barragán intended. Beyond this, the house is a symphony of colors. The vivid pink walls, the unexpected purple in the dining area (yes, the dining room with a pool!), and even subtle yellow accents throughout the interior create such a unique atmosphere. Each room feels like a carefully composed painting where light, color, and texture come together perfectly. It truly makes you understand why it's considered one of his greatest works. While the interior is the main draw, don’t forget to appreciate the exterior. The facade, with its distinctive geometric shapes and subtle coloring, gives you a hint of the magic within. It’s understated from the street, which makes the interior reveal even more impactful. And if you pay attention, the small outdoor areas, including a charming courtyard, offer moments of tranquility and another perspective on Barragán's integration of nature and architecture. It's not just about the specific rooms but how the whole "plan" of the house unfolds, creating a cohesive and immersive experience. Now, about that Mxn$600 entry fee – I know it's a significant amount, and it’s a valid point of discussion, especially if you're on a budget. Having experienced it, I'd say it's absolutely worth it if you have a genuine interest in architecture, design, or specifically Luis Barragán's work. It's more than just a photo op; it's an educational and sensory journey into a living piece of art. For those who might not be as deeply invested, it might feel a bit steep. My personal advice? Book well in advance via email, ask questions during the tour (the guides are incredibly knowledgeable!), and allow yourself to truly soak in the atmosphere. Don't rush through; spend time in each space, observe how the light changes, and appreciate the genius behind every detail. It's a "mini travel guide" experience in itself, offering insights into a master's vision that reshaped Mexican modernism. I learned so much about his design principles just by being there. The section of the house featuring the unique "sky" light in the pool area is particularly fascinating, showcasing his innovative approach to natural illumination. This visit truly solidified my appreciation for Barragán's ability to create spaces that evoke deep emotions and a sense of calm.
