Rating Pain of the Basic Piercings I Have
Nostril 👃:
My most recent piercing. Not in the slightest bit painful, my eyes teared up a bit because of the region the piercing is located, but I honestly couldn’t tell she pierced me. People argued about the placement a lot for this, each artist I went to told me to get it at a diff spot.
Belly 🫃:
This was the second most painful. The needle going through I’d rate a 5/10. It’s quick, but not painless it definitely stings. The worst part for me was after the piercing was already in. Every step I took, every move I made, shifted my piercing a bit and it STUNG. It also got hooked on everything. Healed up beautifully tho no problems at all.
Cartilage 👂:
This was my most painful piercing. I’ll convince myself I want an industrial, then I remember how bad this hurt and I reconsider. Maybe it’s because it was pierced with a thumbtack, but it felt like someone jabbed a sword through my ear. Despite consistent cleaning, it constantly got infected and developed giant keloids. I ended up having to take one of them out and it scarred over. Honestly the worst piercing experience I’ve had. 110/10 the whole experience was bloody and painful.
Lobe:
Not painful at all. I got all of 3 of mine pierced with a gun at the mall and never had any complications. 0/10.
Piercing pain can vary widely depending on the area of the body and individual pain tolerance. According to common experiences and the author's detailed account, nostril piercings rate very low on the pain scale (around 1/10), often causing only minor pinching and occasional tearing due to nerve sensitivity in the area. Placement debates among artists highlight the importance of choosing the right spot for comfort and aesthetics. Belly button piercings, although quick to perform, can be moderately painful (approximately 5/10 to 6/10 during and after the procedure). The movement of this area means the piercing site may sting after each motion, and the jewelry can easily catch on clothing, causing additional discomfort. Still, with proper care, belly piercings generally heal well without complications. Cartilage piercings are widely recognized as the most painful among basic piercings, with reported pain levels reaching extreme highs (up to 100/10 by the article’s rating). The cartilage's dense, less vascularized tissue leads to a more intense sensation during piercing, and improper technique, such as using a thumbtack instead of a professional needle, can exacerbate the pain and lead to infections or keloid formation. Consistent cleaning is crucial, but even then, cartilage piercings have a higher risk for complications compared to other locations. Lobe piercings are typically the least painful (rated 0/10 by the author) and are often done with a piercing gun at malls or shops. They generally heal quickly and with the fewest problems, making them popular as starter piercings. For those considering piercings, it's essential to research pain expectations and aftercare, select reputable piercing professionals, and choose anatomical locations wisely. Understanding risks such as infection, scarring, and the healing process can lead to more informed decisions and enjoyable experiences. Using properly sterilized tools and following a strict hygiene routine reduces complications. Additional factors impacting pain include individual pain thresholds, the skill of the piercer, and post-piercing care. People with sensitive skin or prone to keloids should be particularly cautious with cartilage piercings. Overall, educating yourself on each piercing type's pain, healing, and care will make your body art journey safer and more satisfying.
