I spent 11 years in law to learn this. I’ll teach it to you for free.

One of the most useful things I learned from law had almost nothing to do with law.

It was learning that the person with the strongest position is often not the loudest, smartest, or most persuasive person in the room.

It is the person who can walk away.

That idea changed how I think about salary negotiations, clients, big purchases, and even work itself. The more options you have, the less likely you are to accept something just because you are scared of losing it.

And this is where money quietly changes your life.

Savings give you options. Investments give you options. A lower-cost lifestyle gives you options.

The goal is not to become impossible to negotiate with. It is to stop negotiating from desperation.

Because when “no” is genuinely available to you, you start making very different decisions.

Send this to someone who has a big negotiation coming up. Save it for the next time you are tempted to accept less because you feel like you have no choice. And follow @RedDotFIRE for more on using money to create leverage, freedom, and options.

... Read moreAfter spending many years immersed in the legal profession, I realized that the concept of BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement) changed my personal and financial decisions far beyond the courtroom. BATNA is a negotiation strategy emphasizing the importance of having genuine alternatives before entering any negotiation. One practical step I took was always listing out my actual alternatives before negotiating—whether it was about salary, a big purchase, or job offers. Writing down these options beforehand helped me clarify my walk-away point, reducing emotion-driven decisions. For example, when negotiating my salary, I would think about whether I had another job offer, the option to stay put, or freelance opportunities. This mental preparation gave me confidence and prevented me from settling out of fear. Improving your BATNA is just as crucial. I focused on expanding my alternatives by applying to multiple companies, getting several quotes when buying property, and building emergency savings to increase financial flexibility. This approach transformed my mindset: when you know you can walk away without losing everything, you start negotiating from strength rather than desperation. Estimating the other party's BATNA can also shift how you negotiate. By understanding if your employer has multiple candidates or if a seller has alternative buyers, you can gauge your leverage. Remember, negotiation is a two-way street where understanding both sides’ options matters. Financially, this strategy is powerful because money provides options. Having savings, investments, and a budget-conscious lifestyle are all ways to strengthen your BATNA. An emergency fund serves as a cushion allowing you to say no to unfavorable offers, while investments generate passive income that reduces dependence on any single paycheck. This framework isn’t just for lawyers or financial experts; it’s a universal life skill that improved my career and personal life immensely. By learning to walk away with confidence and preparation, I negotiated better deals, made smarter decisions, and ultimately achieved greater freedom. If you want to improve your negotiation skills, start by truly understanding your BATNA and actively working to enhance it. This will empower you to make choices aligned with your values rather than fear of loss. BATNA is more than a legal principle—it’s a mindset that cultivates financial independence and career leverage.

spent $500 on this glacier trek!! 🇦🇷🥶🧊
Perito Moreno had long been considered the rare glacier that defied the odds, stable while everything else around the world was retreating. Part of Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia, it’s now losing mass faster than it has in 40+ years 😭 I’m so thankful we got to witness it in all its glory

Since I was young, I’ve lived with the "one double, one single" lid struggle. So two years ago, I finally decided to fix it. My doctor suggested the full works: Ptosis Repair + Double Eyelid Surgery + Epicanthoplasty. Since Ptosis is a medical condition, I could claim insurance/Medisave
