book #2 of the series: let’s talk about it!

The Martian!!!

This was such a good book. I finished reading it in only a few days. Would definitely recommend!

It can be a little bit morbid at certain times, but that’s to be expected given the plot. Very scientific, hard to understand at some points but I think that adds to the storyline of how resourceful Mark Watney was.

Love love love the last 100 pages. Everything picks up and gets far more intense. I really wonder how my opinion would differ on the entire book if I hadn’t seen the movie first, therefore knowing what to expect!

Andy Weir has another book called Project Hail Mary that I’ll put on my list to read! I have no idea what it’s about but I think a movie is coming out next year about it, so now’s my chance to read the book before watching!

Comment other thoughts you had on the book and we can talk about it!

... Read moreAs a fan of The Martian, it’s fascinating to dive deeper into the scientific elements Andy Weir incorporates throughout the novel. Even for readers who might find some of the physics or chemistry challenging—like former bio majors or those new to such topics—these details enhance the authenticity of Mark Watney's struggle to survive on Mars. The science isn’t just for show; it contributes meaningfully to the story's tension and realism. Additionally, the novel’s morbid moments, as mentioned, reflect the dire circumstances Mark faces, which makes his ingenious problem-solving even more impressive. This tone difference is something to expect and appreciate, especially when compared to the movie adaptation, which condenses and visualizes some of that complexity. For readers wondering if they should watch the movie before or after the book, it’s worth noting that experiencing the book first may provide a more nuanced view of the story’s scientific challenges and the character’s emotions. Conversely, watching the movie first can make the book feel more like an expansion of a familiar journey. With Andy Weir’s upcoming book Project Hail Mary also generating excitement—especially with a movie adaptation on the horizon—The Martian stands as a perfect entry point into Weir’s work. His ability to weave science with thrilling, character-driven storytelling keeps readers coming back. If you enjoyed The Martian’s blend of suspense, survival, and science, Project Hail Mary is highly anticipated. Lastly, the mild language and recommended age of 15+ are good to keep in mind for readers considering this novel for younger audiences. Overall, The Martian offers an engaging experience that combines thought-provoking science with gripping adventure, making it a highly recommended read for sci-fi lovers and casual readers alike.
