PC Won’t Start? Make a Windows 10 Bootable USB

When your PC won't boot, a Windows 10 bootable USB can save the day. In this quick guide, I'll show you how to make one from scratch. It's simple, beginner-friendly, and works on most PCs. #boot #usb #windows10 #pctips

2025/12/19 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so you've made your Windows 10 bootable USB – great job! But what now? I remember the first time my PC completely froze on a blue screen and wouldn't start. I had made a bootable USB, but figuring out how to use it for repair felt like another hurdle. Don't worry, it's actually quite straightforward, and I'll walk you through the next steps to get your computer up and running again. First things first, you need to tell your computer to boot from the USB drive instead of its main hard drive. This usually involves restarting your PC and pressing a specific key repeatedly during startup – common ones are F2, F10, F12, DEL, or ESC. Look for a message like "Press F12 for Boot Menu" or "Press DEL to enter Setup." If you miss it, just restart and try again! Once you're in the boot menu or BIOS/UEFI settings, find the "Boot Order" or "Boot Priority" section and select your USB drive as the first boot device. Save changes and exit, and your PC should now boot from the USB. Once it boots from the USB, you'll see the Windows setup screen. Don't click "Install now" unless you're planning a full reinstall! Instead, look for a small link that says "Repair your computer" in the bottom-left corner. Click that, and you'll enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This is where the magic happens for fixing those frustrating startup errors or boot loops. Inside WinRE, navigate to "Troubleshoot" and then "Advanced options." Here are some of the most useful tools you'll find: Startup Repair: This is your go-to for most common Windows 10 startup errors. It automatically diagnoses and fixes issues preventing Windows from loading correctly. I've had this save my PC from a nasty boot loop more times than I can count! System Restore: If you've created restore points (which I highly recommend doing regularly!), you can revert your system to an earlier state when it was working fine. This is super helpful if a new driver or software update caused the problem. Uninstall Updates: Sometimes, a recent Windows update can cause stability issues or even a blue screen of death. This option lets you remove the latest quality or feature updates, which can often resolve the problem. Command Prompt: For more advanced users, the Command Prompt can be powerful. You can use commands like bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, and bootrec /rebuildbcd to fix master boot record or boot configuration data issues. It sounds techy, but there are tons of guides online if you need to use it. Reset this PC: If all else fails, this option can reinstall Windows while either keeping your personal files or removing everything. It's a more drastic step but often resolves deep-seated system corruption. Using your Windows 10 bootable USB disk for these repairs can truly be a lifesaver when your PC refuses to cooperate. It's all about methodically trying these options until your computer is back to its happy, functional self. Good luck, you've got this!
