Family Values Celebration!
Every December my family has a celebration of our family values! We strive to practice them throughout the year, we revisit one each month on our family date nights, but the big celebration is in December!
We will spend one evening on each value from Christmas Day until New Years Day.
Our family values are:
Reflection/Growth
Compassion
Responsibility
Gratitude
Community
Respect
Love

It's so wonderful to hear how many of you are looking for ways to strengthen your family and community values! My family's December celebration is just one small part of how we try to live these principles year-round, and I wanted to share a bit more about how we integrate them into our daily lives, beyond just the festive season. One of the values we hold dear is Reflection/Growth. For us, this isn't just about looking back, but actively setting 'New Year's Intentions' as we saw in our collage vision. We encourage each family member, from the youngest to the oldest, to think about one area they want to grow in or a skill they want to develop. This could be anything from reading a new book each month to learning a new recipe or even a new language! We then check in casually throughout the year, celebrating small victories and offering encouragement. It fosters a mindset of continuous improvement and helps us support each other's personal journeys, making growth a shared family adventure. Community is another cornerstone that extends beyond our immediate household. We try to engage in local events, like volunteering at a food bank once a quarter or participating in neighborhood clean-ups. Even simple acts, like baking cookies for a new neighbor or sending handmade cards to elderly relatives, can make a huge difference. These small gestures teach my children the importance of giving back and being an active, positive part of the wider community. It's truly heartwarming to see them embrace these opportunities and understand their role in making the world a better place. We also focus heavily on Responsibility and Gratitude. Responsibility starts with age-appropriate chores and understanding consequences, but extends to teaching them about the impact of their actions – on themselves, on others, and on the environment. For Gratitude, it's something we practice daily; at dinner, we often go around the table and share one thing we are grateful for from our day. This simple ritual reminds us to appreciate the blessings in our lives, no matter how small, and fosters a positive family atmosphere. It's amazing how much joy and perspective this brings! Finally, Compassion and Respect are woven into everything we do. We talk openly about understanding others' feelings, even when we disagree, and treating everyone with kindness. This means listening actively, offering help when needed, and standing up for what's right. Whether it's at school, with friends, or within our family, these values guide our interactions. Implementing these values doesn't have to be complicated or feel like a chore. It's about consistent, small actions and open conversations that collectively build a strong foundation for both our family and our engagement with the wider world. I truly believe that by focusing on these core family and community values, we're not just raising happy and well-adjusted individuals, but also contributing to a more compassionate, responsible, and connected world. I'd love to hear what values your family treasures, and how you bring them to life every day!
