Okra, Tomatoes, Peas, Lettuce, Squash & Cucumbers.

2025/2/14 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow gardening enthusiasts! I wanted to share a deeper dive into one of my absolute favorite cool-season crops: peas! There’s just something incredibly satisfying about cracking open a fresh pea pod right from your own garden. And this year, I’m getting a fantastic head start by sowing my pea seeds indoors, just like I do with my cucumbers, squash, okra, lettuce, and beefsteak tomatoes. Starting peas from seed indoors has been a game-changer for me. I love using my little wire-mesh mini-greenhouse – it creates the perfect cozy environment for those tiny seeds to germinate, especially when the weather outside is still a bit unpredictable. Forget waiting for the last frost; by starting them early, I can get a jump on the growing season and enjoy those sweet, crisp peas much sooner. My planting dates are always carefully noted, making sure I time everything just right for when they're ready to move outdoors. When it comes to peas, there’s a surprising variety out there! I usually grow a mix of shelling peas (for those classic sweet green peas), snap peas (delicious eaten pod and all), and sometimes even snow peas for stir-fries. Before planting, I always give my pea seeds a good soak in lukewarm water for about 12-24 hours. This really helps to soften their tough outer shell and encourages quicker germination. Then, I plant them in small paper pots or seed trays, usually about an inch deep. I make sure to label everything clearly – peas, cucumbers, squash, you name it – so I don't get mixed up later! Once they've sprouted in my mini-greenhouse, providing them with plenty of light is crucial. A sunny windowsill or, even better, a grow light, will prevent them from getting leggy. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Pea seedlings are pretty hardy, but they do appreciate a stable environment. About a week or two before I plan to transplant them outside, I begin the 'hardening off' process. This means gradually introducing them to outdoor conditions – a few hours outside on a sheltered porch, increasing the time each day. It helps them adjust to the sun, wind, and temperature fluctuations, making the transition much smoother. When they’re ready for their permanent home, I choose a spot in my garden that gets at least 6 hours of sun a day. Peas love well-draining soil rich in organic matter. For climbing varieties like most shelling and snap peas, providing a trellis, netting, or stakes right at planting time is essential. They’ll quickly send out tendrils to grab onto anything they can find! Throughout the growing season, consistent watering is key, especially when the plants are flowering and forming pods. I try to avoid overhead watering to prevent mildew. Harvesting is the best part! For shelling peas, I wait until the pods are plump and green. Snap peas are best when they're tender and crunchy, before the peas inside get too big. Regular harvesting actually encourages the plant to produce more, so keep picking! There’s truly nothing quite like the taste of fresh, homegrown peas. It makes all the effort of seed starting, nurturing them in the mini-greenhouse, and careful transplanting absolutely worth it. If you haven't tried growing peas from seed, I highly recommend it – it's a rewarding experience from start to finish!
