My 7-day adventure through Colombia was absolutely packed with incredible sights and sounds, and I can't wait to share some of my top recommendations, especially focusing on what to explore in Medellin and beyond! Starting with Medellin, which truly surprised me with its vibrant energy and transformation. If you're looking for 'Medellin attractions,' you absolutely cannot miss a visit to Comuna 13. What was once a no-go zone has become a powerful symbol of resilience and art. Taking a free walking tour (or a paid one, which is what I did!) through the electric escalators, seeing the incredible street art, and watching the local dance performances was a deeply moving experience. The views from up there are also breathtaking! Another must-see is Botero Plaza, right in front of the Museum of Antioquia. Fernando Botero's voluminous sculptures are iconic and make for fantastic photo opportunities. The museum itself is worth a visit to understand more about Colombian art and history. For a taste of traditional Antioquian life and panoramic city views, head up to Pueblito Paisa on Cerro Nutibara. It’s a charming replica of an old Colombian town, perfect for a relaxed afternoon. And don't forget to ride the Metro Cable! It's not just transportation; it offers stunning bird's-eye views of the city sprawling into the valleys. Moving out from Medellin, a day trip to Guatapé in the Antioquia region is essential. The colorful zócalos (decorative facades) on the houses are incredibly picturesque, and climbing the 700+ steps of El Peñol rock offers one of the most rewarding views I've ever seen – a vast lake dotted with islands. It’s a bit of a climb, but totally worth it! Finally, I ended my 7 days in the utterly charming coastal city of Cartagena de Indias, Bolivar. The Walled City is like stepping back in time, with its cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and lively plazas. I spent hours just wandering, getting lost in the colorful alleyways, and enjoying fresh fruit from street vendors. For history buffs, the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is an impressive fortress with a rich past and great views of the city. Make sure to explore the vibrant Getsemanà neighborhood just outside the walls; it’s bursting with street art, cool cafes, and a fantastic nightlife scene. If you have extra time, a boat trip to the nearby Rosario Islands for some pristine beaches and snorkeling is a perfect way to relax after all the sightseeing. Overall, Colombia offers such a diverse travel experience, from the mountain beauty of Medellin and Antioquia to the Caribbean vibes of Cartagena. I highly recommend spending at least a week to soak it all in!
