Some of this weeks nursing notes for OB & MEDSURG🩺

Here are some of this week’s notes for my nursing classes! This unit for OB is newborn assessments and MedSurg is renal disruptions. I’m still working on them but here’s what I got! Feel free to use them or whatever you wanna do with them! This is information from my PowerPoints from lecture, my nursing textbooks, ATI books, and my #leveluprn flashcards. Show me your notes aesthetics and how you write yours! ☺️ #nursingschooljourney #nursingschool #nursingstudent #nursingstudentaesthetics #nursing #Lemon8Diary #lemon8creator #lemon8education#nursingnotes

... Read moreWhen I first started learning newborn assessments in OB, it felt like a whirlwind of information! So many details, from perfectly suctioning secretions to understanding those first vital signs. What really helped me was breaking it down into manageable chunks. For APGAR scores, I always tried to visualize a healthy baby: crying vigorously (respiratory effort), moving all limbs (muscle tone), sneezing when stimulated (reflex irritability), and a pink body (color). And honestly, remembering what constitutes a 'normal' heart rate (110-160 bpm) was key for quickly assessing newborn health. The physical assessment for newborns can also be overwhelming. I found it useful to go system by system. For skin assessments, I made sure to really understand conditions like Mongolian spots (those benign, bluish discolorations), Milia (tiny white bumps, totally normal!), Erythema toxicum (a common, transient rash), and the Harlequin sign (that temporary color change when a baby lies on one side). Knowing these common variations prevented me from unnecessary panic during clinicals and helped me confidently explain findings to parents. Then there's MedSurg, specifically renal disruptions. The kidneys are just fascinating, but oh-so-complex! Understanding the nephron as the functional unit was my 'aha!' moment. Thinking about it as a tiny, sophisticated filtering system helped me grasp its importance. I focused on the three main processes: filtration (getting stuff out of the blood), reabsorption (taking back what the body needs), and secretion (getting rid of waste products). And don't even get me started on GFR! I learned to visualize Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) as the speed limit of the kidney's filter—how much blood is being cleaned per minute. When you hear about ADH (Antidiuretic Hormone) and *aldosterone*, remember they're the body's master water and salt managers, respectively. ADH holds onto water, and aldosterone holds onto salt (and water follows!). For anyone struggling with nursing notes, I highly recommend finding a method that works for you. Mine involves using different colored pens and drawing diagrams, especially for complex anatomy like the renal system. It's not just about making them 'aesthetic' but about making them *memorable*. I also found that consolidating information from PowerPoints, textbooks, and resources like ATI or LevelUpRN flashcards into one cohesive set of handwritten notes saved me so much time when reviewing. Don't just copy; synthesize! This way, when you revisit topics like newborn vital signs or the intricacies of urine formation, your brain has already done the heavy lifting of organizing the information. It really makes a difference during crunch time!
