Semester break as a nursing student

I definitely have looked forward to my semester break and enjoying the holidays without the stress of homework and studying for exams! Now that it’s here this is what I’m doing over the break to stay in the groove but also enjoy the time off:

- watching videos to stay on top of my knowledge. Great channels I use on YouTube are nurse Sarah, level up RN, and simple nursing! There are so many more but these are my top ones!

- doing some light reading through my ATI books and doing practice quizzes.

- taking NCLEX style practice quizzes

- organizing my planners and gathering my supplies for the next semester

- going to scheduled clinical shifts at the hospital (this is required of me as a student apprentice)

- setting goals, assessing my strengths and weaknesses and figuring out what I like and what I don’t like in regards to departments and units

And most importantly….

Rest and relaxing!!! It’s so important to take the time to recover and enjoy the time off! Take some time to breathe and nurture your relationship with yourself and others! It’s also important to take the time to rebuild your strength for the next semester!

Let me know how you’re celebrating the holidays and taking the time to enjoy your break!

... Read moreHey fellow nursing students! We all know that semester break often comes with a bit of a dilemma: how do you truly relax and recharge without feeling like you're falling behind? It's a fine line to walk, but I've found a few strategies that really help me make the most of my time off, especially as a nursing student apprentice. First, let's talk about staying sharp without burning out. Watching videos from channels like Nurse Sarah or Simple Nursing isn't just passive learning; I try to engage with the material. I'll pause the video, jot down key concepts, or even quickly explain it out loud to myself. This active recall turns watching into a mini-study session. For my ATI books and practice quizzes, I don't try to cram new information. Instead, I focus on areas I felt weaker in during the last semester, or I refresh on foundational knowledge that I know will be crucial for my next set of clinical rotations. Think of it as strengthening your base, not building a new tower right now. It's about maintaining momentum, not accelerating it completely. For those of us who are also nursing student apprentices, our clinical shifts during the break are a fantastic opportunity. Since the pressure of exams is off, I find I can observe more deeply and ask more questions without feeling rushed. I use this time to reflect on what I've learned in class and how it applies in a real-world setting. It helps solidify my understanding and gives me practical insights I can't get from a textbook. It's a chance to truly connect the dots and see how all those lectures come together in patient care. And then there's the preparation aspect. Organizing my planners and gathering supplies for the next semester might sound boring, but it's incredibly freeing. I like to declutter my study space, make sure all my pens and highlighters are ready, and even make a preliminary list of topics I'll be covering. This pre-semester prep reduces a lot of stress when classes actually start. It feels good to go into a new semester knowing I have a clear plan and all my tools are in place. I also use this time to review my goals from the previous semester, assess my strengths (what went well?) and weaknesses (what could I improve?), and really think about what aspects of nursing I'm drawn to, or what units spark my interest. This self-reflection is so important for shaping my future career path. But honestly, the most crucial part of any nursing school break, especially this winter break, is to truly rest and relax. Our brains and bodies work incredibly hard during the semester, and burnout is a real threat. For me, resting isn't just sleeping in; it's actively disconnecting from academic pressures. This means spending quality time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, getting outdoors, or simply enjoying quiet moments. It’s about nurturing your mental health and remembering who you are outside of your student identity. Rebuilding your strength isn't just physical; it's emotional and mental too. So, embrace that downtime. You've earned it, and it's essential for coming back refreshed and ready to tackle the next challenge.
