Things I do as a new grad ER RN
Over the past few months working in the ER there are definitely a few things I find myself doing to make sure I’m as successful as I can be.
1. Challenge yourself! Your orientation time is the perfect time to take on new/scary things. Find out what makes you nervous or what you’re uncomfortable with and take those patients as often as possible.
2. It is important to make sure that you ask your questions and voice your concerns when you’re not sure about something. You never know when it can lead to a good catch or maybe even a discovery that can help a pt.
3. It is soo important to advocate for yourself. It is okay and expected that you’re not gonna know a whole lot when you first start. Sometimes you may need to inform or remind someone that you’re new or that you don’t know a specific procedure or task.
4. At the end of my shifts I like to make sure that I empty my pockets to make sure I don’t have any supplies that I may have thrown in my pocket while helping patients.
5. When I am done with a shift I like to try and keep work at work and not bring it home. I keep my stethoscope and other supplies I use at work in my locker and pull them out before my shift and put them back after. I even will switch out jackets to give myself that mentality that my shift is done and I’m going home.
6. Enjoy your days off! Rest, relax, recover. Take the time to make sure you’re ready for your next shifts and do not burn yourself out. Take that time to connect with friends and family. Use the time to work on yourself and health if you can. Do what you need to do on these days.
These are some things I do to help me be successful in the ER. Hopefully they may help you or give you different ideas to try! Lemme know what you think! #erworkers #rn
