Living with multiple neurological and hormonal changes, such as MS, AuDHD, OCD, and perimenopause, adds layers of complexity to everyday life. One shared experience is the phenomenon often referred to as “selective hearing,” which many describe as the brain’s way of managing an overload of sensory input when multitasking. I’ve personally found that my brain switches into this mode, especially during busy or stressful moments, allowing me to focus on what feels most urgent while inadvertently tuning out other stimuli. This coping mechanism isn’t laziness or ignoring—it’s an adaptive response to juggling chronic illness symptoms, executive functioning challenges, and hormonal fluctuations. When you add the neurodivergent perspective, like AuDHD (Autism and ADHD combined traits), it further reshapes how multitasking plays out. Forgetting conversations or missing details can become common, not because of a lack of care but due to this intricate neurospicy brain wiring. Setting clear boundaries and recognizing your limits is essential. In my journey, acknowledging when I need to slow down or prioritize self-care has been transformative. It’s empowering to identify these selective hearing moments as natural rather than frustrating. Connecting with communities around #womensupportingwomen and #neurospicy networks helps foster understanding that these experiences are valid and shared by many. Embracing your midlife glow-up, even amidst perimenopause and chronic illness, encourages healing while maintaining authenticity. You’re not alone navigating this unique phase, and through shared insights and support, it’s possible to manage multitasking in ways that honor both your brain's needs and your wellbeing.
