When snow makes a young heart dance

NYC had not seen significant snow for quite some time until last week, but the snowfall brought with it a heartwarming story. I saw this huge teacher lead a little girl to the nurse’s office. Soon they popped out with ice in a bag. Apparently, the little kid was in some pain due to an accident on the playground, and she needed something to sooth her. But what happened next was magical. The huge guy who was apparently her teacher, had already promised her some snow. So, the little girl was waiting where I was, and then he went outside to scoop some snow that he could add to her bag of ice. I could see the excitement build in her face as she waited for this teacher, but what I saw next rocked my world; for as soon as the teacher emerged with snow in his hands, the little girl who was in pain, broke out into a dance, and the teacher joined in. They were both dancing because of the snow and I watched them in utter amazement and delight before the teacher finally added the snow to her ice bag as he had promised.

Soon they were out of sight having returned to the classroom or the playground. But did she not step on the snow before she entered the building? Was not the snow in abundance and hence something of no value? What made a little girl dance at the prospect of receiving snow? The answer is simple - it was because that snow was no longer ordinary snow, it had become snow infused with love.

Even the simplest of things or actions can become extraordinary and magical, when mingled with sincere love. Consider how great then is the love of Jesus, for he did the greatest of action with the greatest of love.

... Read moreThat moment, seeing the girl's spontaneous snow dance in the snowy New York City street scene, truly stuck with me. It was more than just a sweet interaction; it was a profound illustration of how the simplest things become extraordinary and magical when mingled with sincere love. We often think of 'love stories' in grand terms, but this was a quiet, everyday kind of love that transformed a mundane, even painful, situation into pure delight. It made me reflect on all the little 'love stories' that unfold during a snowfall, especially in a bustling city like NYC. When the first flakes start to fall, there's always a collective gasp of wonder. The city, usually so frenetic, slows down just a bit, becoming a picturesque, snow-covered landscape. I've seen parents bundling up their kids for their first taste of snow, their faces alight with excitement as they try to catch flakes on their tongues. Those are small, beautiful love stories, too – moments of shared joy that create lasting memories. Then there are the subtle acts of kindness, much like the teacher in the original story. Neighbors helping each other shovel snow from their sidewalks, friends sharing a warm coffee after a chilly walk through snow-covered parks, or even strangers offering a hand when someone slips on the ice. Each of these moments, however small, weaves into the fabric of a collective love story – a narrative of human connection that thrives even when the weather is cold. It's like a silent 'SNOW DANCE ALERT!' where kindness is the rhythm and connection is the melody. I remember one year, after a particularly heavy snowfall, looking out at the illuminated skyscrapers in the distance, with the phrase 'Let it snow Let it snow Let it snow' echoing in my mind. The city was hushed, blanketed in white, and it felt incredibly peaceful. It was a stark contrast to the usual hustle, a reminder that nature has a way of bringing out a different side of us, a softer, more reflective side. This stillness often gives rise to moments of unexpected warmth and shared humanity. What I learned from watching that little girl dance is that it’s not about the abundance or scarcity of snow; it’s about the spirit with which it’s received and shared. When something is infused with genuine care and affection, its value skyrockets. It inspires a spontaneous, joyful 'snow dance,' not just from a child, but from anyone who witnesses such pure, unadulterated kindness. These are the truly magical snow scenes that stay with us, long after the last snowflake has melted, reminding us that love is the greatest transformer of all.
