... Read moreHey bookworms! Since I've been diving deep into the world of H.D. Carlton lately, I wanted to share a bit more than just quick takes on some of her most talked-about books. If you're like me and constantly searching for your next dark romance fix, you've probably come across her name, and maybe even specific titles like 'Haunting Adeline' or 'Hunting Adeline' from the popular Cat & Mouse Duet. Let's break down my full thoughts and why I gave the ratings I did. First up, 'Satans Affair.' This one hit me hard. When I said it was “genuinely f***ing sad,” I really meant it. Having read some of H.D. Carlton's other works first (like the ones in the Cat & Mouse Duet), getting into Sibby's mind in 'Satans Affair' felt incredibly raw and intense. It's a psychological ride, exploring trauma and obsession in such a visceral way. You really feel the weight of her experiences, and it's not an easy read by any means, but it's incredibly compelling if you can handle the dark themes. It delves into the darker side of human nature and pushes boundaries, which is definitely a hallmark of Carlton's style. For its emotional impact and deep character dive, it’s a memorable read, though I’d recommend checking trigger warnings before jumping in. Then there’s 'Haunting Adeline,' which seems to be *everywhere*. I know I mentioned it was 'okay' and I 'didn't hate it,' but let me elaborate on why it earned a 3.5/5 from me. This book certainly delivers on the 'dark romance' promise with its intense stalker trope. The suspense and the cat-and-mouse dynamic (pun intended, given the series name!) kept me hooked for a good portion. Zade is definitely a complex character, and the push-and-pull with Adeline is palpable. However, for me, some parts felt a bit drawn out, and while the spice was certainly there, I sometimes wished for a tighter plot. It's a wild ride, and if you're looking for something that will shock and keep you on edge, it definitely achieves that. The 3.5/5 rating reflects that while I found it engaging, it didn't quite reach the 'OMG, must-read' level for me personally. Now, onto 'Hunting Adeline,' which is the second part of the Cat & Mouse Duet. My experience here was a bit different, leading to a 2.5/5 rating. The first half was incredibly strong; I literally couldn't put it down. The stakes were high, the tension was palpable, and I was desperate to know what would happen next. However, somewhere past the halfway mark, the pacing really started to drag for me. It felt like the story lost some of its momentum, and I found myself skimming ahead. When I said it felt 'long-winded and just could've ended much faster,' that's exactly what I meant. There were sections that, in my opinion, didn't contribute significantly to the plot progression and made the overall reading experience feel a bit tedious towards the end. It's a shame because the potential was definitely there in the beginning. If you're committing to the duet, be prepared for a bit of a marathon, especially in the latter half of 'Hunting Adeline.' Overall, H.D. Carlton's books are not for the faint of heart. They often explore very dark themes, including violence, trauma, and morally gray characters. If you're looking for dark romance that pushes boundaries and doesn't shy away from uncomfortable topics, she's an author to check out. Just make sure to always look up specific trigger warnings for each book, as they can be intense. My journey through these books has been a mix of captivating intensity and moments where the pacing tested my patience, but they certainly leave an impression!
