They don’t make furniture like this anymore

This 3 piece Bassett bedroom set is client owned. My client wanted the set painted in a deep charcoal color with the tops restained. She wanted the outdated nut carvings to disappear & wanted updated hardware.

Let me start by saying that they simply don’t make furniture like this anymore. It’s solid and extremely heavy. Very well built. In fact so heavy that I struggled to move it to get photos!

I filled in and covered the nuts, removed the old outdated hardware, cleaned it all, stripped and sanded the tops and painted the pieces in a color called Eclipse (milk paint) by Rust-Oleum. The tops were stained in Western Oak by Varathane and everything was given three coats of Armadillo TopCoat by Mélange Artisan Mineral Paints. New Hardware was added from Amazon.

I couldn’t be happier with the final results. This set turned out beautifully and I’m sure my client will love the pieces for her newly updated space.

... Read moreFurniture restoration is a fabulous way to breathe new life into cherished pieces, especially when it comes to solid, well-made items like Bassett furniture. Many homeowners favor these types of furniture due to their durability and craftsmanship. While newer furniture may look appealing, it often lacks the weight and quality of older pieces. The transformation process typically involves cleaning, stripping old finishes, and applying new paint or stain to modernize appearances. Techniques for restoring furniture also include covering outdated designs, such as rustic carvings, and upgrading hardware for a fresh look. One popular option is using milk paint for its superior finish and environmentally friendly properties. When selecting paint colors, deeper shades like charcoal can beautifully complement wooden stains, like Western Oak, to create a sophisticated contrast. Choosing quality topcoats is essential for durability and protection, ensuring the piece retains its beauty for years to come. Before starting a restoration, it’s crucial to consider the furniture's overall integrity and history. Knowing the manufacturer's background, such as Bassett's long-standing reputation for quality craftsmanship, adds valuable context to the piece's character and longevity. Ultimately, restoring vintage furniture not only honors its past but also allows it to serve new purposes in contemporary settings.
