Mini Curio Cabinet Update

This piece will be used for vintage quilt storage/display, so no interior shelving was wanted. The client has the glass panels, so I wasn’t able to reassemble the piece. I did manage to get one photo without the glass and thanks to technology, CHATGPT gave me a rendering of a finished/staged piece. It turned out cute, right?!!

This mini curio cabinet was completely updated. The interior mirror was removed and replaced with wood-the glass was all removed for easier refinishing. The top, doors and bottom drawer were all stripped and restained in a custom mix. The rest of the piece was painted in Lamp Black by General Finishes and sealed with GFHPTC. New hardware was added. #remadebyrobin #curiocabinet #customfurniture #paintedfurniture #beforeandafterfurniture

... Read moreI've always had a soft spot for mini curio cabinets. There's something so charming about these compact display pieces, but often, the ones you find second-hand can look a bit dated. That's where the magic of a DIY makeover comes in! My recent project involved transforming a rather dark, old-fashioned mini curio cabinet into a bright, modern piece, perfect for showcasing my vintage quilts. It was such a rewarding experience, and I wanted to share some insights for anyone thinking about undertaking their own mini curio renovation. First off, why bother updating a mini curio? For me, it was about giving a forgotten piece a new purpose and making it truly fit my home's aesthetic. The original dark wood and mirrored back just didn't work. By stripping parts of it and applying a fresh paint and stain combination, I was able to create something unique. You might want to update yours to match new decor, preserve a family heirloom, or simply enjoy the creative process of bringing an old piece back to life. Seeing the 'before and after' transformation is incredibly satisfying! When starting your own mini curio update, preparation is key. I began by carefully disassembling the cabinet – taking off the doors, removing the glass panes (which were a bit tricky!), and detaching the original hardware. This makes refinishing so much easier. For my project, I decided to remove the interior mirror and replace it with a simple wood panel, which instantly modernized the look and provided a cleaner backdrop for my quilts. Next came the decision of paint versus stain. I loved the look of natural wood, so I chose to strip the top, door frames, and bottom drawer front back to their original wood. This revealed beautiful grain which I then enhanced with a custom mix stain. For the body of the cabinet, I went with a classic, elegant Lamp Black paint. This two-tone approach really highlights the cabinet's features and adds depth. If you're unsure, consider looking at other 'painted black' furniture examples or contrasting with other natural wood pieces you love. Don't forget to properly sand between coats for a super smooth finish! Another crucial element of any furniture makeover is the hardware. The tired, old brass pulls just had to go. Replacing them with sleek, new black hardware instantly elevated the entire piece. It's amazing how much of a difference these small details can make. Once your mini curio cabinet is beautifully updated, the fun of styling begins! While mine now proudly displays vintage quilts, these compact cabinets are incredibly versatile. I’ve seen them used to store small collections like thimbles or miniature figurines, house delicate teacups, or even become a stylish home for small plants and decorative objects. Imagine a 'staged mini curio cabinet' in your living room, filled with your favorite books and small white bowls, just like in some of the design inspirations I saw! You could even use one in a bathroom for toiletries or in a craft room for supplies. The possibilities are truly endless. My biggest piece of advice for anyone tackling a similar project? Take your time. Stripping, sanding, painting, and staining all require patience. Invest in quality products, especially for your paint and sealants, as this will ensure your hard work lasts. And don't be afraid to experiment with colors and finishes. You might discover a combination you absolutely adore, just like my black and natural wood mix. Happy DIYing – I promise the result will be worth it!
