Growing up in Alaska offers a unique experience that shapes your perspective on life, nature, and resilience. Having been born and raised there, I understand the deep connection to vast wilderness and the challenges that come with the harsh climate. Moving away from Alaska to Washington state was a significant transition — the climate was milder, the environment greener, and the community dynamics quite different. It took time to adjust to everyday conveniences that were less accessible in Alaska. Living in Washington for seven years helped me broaden my horizons, develop new social circles, and adapt to a slower-paced but more urban lifestyle. Now, living in Illinois, I’m experiencing another shift — from the Pacific Northwest’s rainy environment to the diverse seasons of the Midwest. Illinois offers vibrant city life opportunities as well as rural charm, which helped me feel connected in different ways compared to my Alaskan upbringing. This journey has taught me the value of embracing change while cherishing where you come from. Each place contributes to personal growth in unexpected ways, from cold, endless winters to warm summers and changing leaves. For anyone considering a big move away from their hometown, my advice is to give yourself time to transition and explore your new surroundings fully. Keep in touch with your roots, but don’t hesitate to welcome new experiences that can enrich your life. Whether it’s adapting to new climates, meeting different people, or finding new hobbies, every step is part of your evolving story.
