So many of you have asked about my badge reel crafting journey! It started with wanting something unique for my scrubs, and I quickly fell in love with making custom designs. While my 'Crustless PB&J' reels are a favorite, the general process of making badge reels can be adapted for so many styles, making it a super fun and rewarding hobby! Beyond just the images, you'll need a few basics to get started with crafting your own Badge Reels. Essential materials include blank retractable badge reels (I prefer the swivel-clip kind for versatility!), a strong adhesive (E6000 is a go-to for many crafters, but always check drying times), and then your design elements. For designs like the 'Crustless PB&J,' we're talking about high-quality printouts, often sealed under epoxy or resin for durability. You'll also need good quality paper or vinyl, and a precise cutting tool. When we print out the image, getting the right size and clarity is crucial. I've learned that a good quality printer makes all the difference in the final look! After the shapes are cut, the magic really begins. Aligning each emblem by hand takes patience, especially when you want everything perfectly centered on the badge reel base. This is where attention to detail really pays off, ensuring that when the ink is permanently melted (if you're using a heat transfer method) or sealed, there are no smudges or misalignments. If you're using resin, careful pouring and bubble removal are key steps. After the images are meticulously placed and sealed (whether through a heat transfer method, by applying a dome of resin/epoxy, or using clear vinyl overlays), they're carefully peeled or trimmed, and any imperfections are removed. This step is key for a professional, clean finish. Next, they're securely glued to the badge reel mechanism. I always set to dry for 24 hours – resist the urge to touch them! This ensures a super strong bond that will hold up to daily wear and tear. Once fully cured, they're ready for their final home in a clear plastic bag, ready to be shipped or gifted. Don't just stop at 'Crustless PBJ'! Think about themes relevant to your profession – for #firstresponders, maybe a 'Lift Assist' design would be perfect, or even custom names and titles. The beauty of DIY badge reels is the endless customization. There are so many ways to add flair, from glitter to tiny charms. Finding inspiration is everywhere – from your favorite snacks to inside jokes with colleagues. It's truly a rewarding hobby that lets you express your personality on something practical. My biggest tip for beginners? Start simple! Don't get overwhelmed by fancy techniques. Master the basics of printing, cutting, sealing, and gluing. Watch some tutorials, gather your materials, and just try it out. Your first few might not be perfect, but you'll learn so much with each one. And remember, the goal is to create something functional and fun that brings a smile to your face. Happy crafting!
