Going back to school as an adult can feel overwhelming, especially when dealing with the unique challenges of being AuDHD (Auditory Processing Disorder combined with ADHD) and complex PTSD. Getting a tutor who understands neurodivergence can make a huge difference. They can help break down information in ways that align with how your brain processes things, which can be a game-changer when traditional teaching methods don’t quite fit. Also, be patient with yourself. Trauma and mental health challenges don’t just vanish overnight, and managing those while studying requires extra emotional work. It’s important to create a study environment that feels safe and accommodating to your needs, whether that means shorter study sessions, frequent breaks, or using sensory tools that help with focus. One thing I wish I’d done is start exploring resources earlier. Many communities and educational programs offer targeted support for neurodivergent adults preparing for the GED. Peer groups or online forums can offer encouragement and tips that you won’t find in textbooks. Finally, remember that age is just a number. Returning to school in your 30s or beyond is entirely valid and can be incredibly rewarding. The key is perseverance and leveraging the right support systems to navigate the new expectations and materials. If you’re feeling discouraged by failing pre-tests or adapting to updated curriculums, know that many have been there and succeeded. It’s okay to take small steps and celebrate each win along the way.
