8 Reasons You Still People-Please

1/7 Edited to

... Read moreHaving struggled with people-pleasing myself, I know how hard it is to break the cycle even when you intellectually understand the problem. One thing I learned over time is that people-pleasing is deeply rooted in nervous system responses conditioned by past experiences of punishment or abandonment when setting boundaries. This means that no matter how much you know setting limits is healthy, your body reacts with panic or guilt, pushing you to say yes. What really helped me was shifting my focus from just understanding to practicing boundary-setting in real life. Cognitive awareness alone wasn’t enough—I had to repeatedly experience saying no and tolerating the discomfort without collapsing in guilt. At first, my chest would tighten or my throat would close, but by accepting these sensations instead of avoiding them, I gradually built capacity and safety in my nervous system. Another insight was realizing that waiting to feel confident before setting boundaries is a trap. Confidence grows from action, not preparation. Each time I said no, even scared, and saw that I was okay despite others’ upset reactions, my nervous system learned that boundaries are safe. It also made a huge difference to connect with supportive people who didn’t punish me for saying no. People-pleasing thrives in isolation, so having models who respected boundaries showed me it’s possible to say no and still be loved. Lastly, I had to practice tolerating guilt without escaping into compliance. Guilt is a feeling that arises in the nervous system and requires practice to sit with. Over time, I developed resilience to that uncomfortable feeling by reminding myself that guilt does not mean I’m doing something wrong—it’s just the nervous system’s alarm bell adjusting to new safety cues. If you’re ready to change this pattern, start small: say no in situations that feel manageable, tolerate the discomfort fully, and look for relationships that support your growth. With consistent practice and compassion toward yourself, the nervous system gradually learns new patterns, freeing you from the cycle of people-pleasing.

Several Muscovy ducks, with white, brown, and black plumage, are gathered on the ground in an outdoor enclosure. The text overlay "Naturally Pest Resistance" emphasizes a key advantage of having ducks.
5 Reasons You Should Have Ducks
1. I won’t pretend that all duck flocks are rainbows and fairytales. I’ve definitely had some aggressive drakes! But usually I was able to fix that by making sure I had the right drake to hen ratio. Chickens are known for being pretty aggressive, going after injured birds and pecking them to death.
