Focal seizures

... Read moreIt's incredibly challenging to navigate life with focal seizures, and one of the biggest hurdles is often trying to explain what's happening to others, or even to your medical team. That's why catching a focal seizure on camera, as I recently did, feels like such a breakthrough. My neurologist has always stressed how valuable video footage can be, because it gives them a real-time, unfiltered look at what a seizure actually entails, far beyond what I can describe after the fact. When I managed to record my seizure, despite my camera zooming in and out a bit during the event, seeing the rapid eye movement truly highlighted what my neurologist needs to assess. If you're trying to capture a seizure, try to film the entire event if possible – from the very first sign, or 'aura,' through the seizure itself, and the post-seizure recovery period. Details like involuntary movements, changes in consciousness, speech difficulties, or even subtle facial twitches are crucial. It’s not just about proving it happened; it’s about providing rich data for diagnosis and treatment adjustments. My experience shows that even imperfect footage is incredibly helpful. A common concern, and one I've certainly had, is: are focal aware seizures dangerous? It’s a valid question. While many focal aware seizures don't lead to serious physical injury, they can still be dangerous in several ways. For instance, if you're driving, operating machinery, or even just climbing stairs, a sudden focal seizure could put you at risk of falling or causing an accident. There's also the risk of 'secondary generalization,' where a focal seizure spreads to both sides of the brain, becoming a tonic-clonic seizure, which carries higher risks like injury, breathing problems, or even status epilepticus – a medical emergency. Beyond physical dangers, the emotional and psychological impact can be significant, causing anxiety, depression, and affecting daily life. It's crucial to discuss any concerns about danger with your neurologist, who can assess your specific situation and advise on safety measures. Understanding an ocular seizure aura is also vital. Before my seizures, I sometimes experience strange visual sensations – a kind of 'warning sign' that something is coming. This is what's known as an aura, and it's actually the beginning of a focal seizure itself. For me, it can involve blurred vision, flashing lights, or even a sense of distorted perception, sometimes accompanied by that peculiar rapid eye movement that was visible in my video. Other people might experience different types of auras, such as strange smells or tastes, tingling sensations, or emotional shifts. Recognizing your specific aura can be a powerful tool for managing your condition, allowing you to get to a safe place or alert someone before the full seizure takes hold. It's like your brain is giving you a tiny head-start. Keeping a diary of these pre-seizure sensations can be incredibly useful for your neurologist to identify patterns and refine your treatment plan. Every bit of information helps in living more safely and effectively with epilepsy.

Three camera lenses, including a Canon 32mm and an AF 56/1.4 M, are displayed on a surface with flowers, illustrating a guide titled 'Let's learn about Focal lengths'.
A stack of books on a shelf, shot at 23mm f1.8, demonstrates that a lower focal length number results in a wider shot, with book titles clearly visible.
A stack of books on a shelf, shot at 32mm f1.8, illustrates different focal lengths for various uses, such as 85mm/50mm for portraits and 25mm for landscapes.
Let’s learn about focal lengths
Focal lengths are not something I understood until recently. They determine how punched in or how wide an image can be, but also it determines how compressed/blurry the background is. What the numbers mean The higher the number, the tighter the shot and the more compressed the background is.
