Hey everyone! I often get asked about the stories behind my landscape photos, especially when they feature iconic places like the Teton Range or those stunning slot canyons. Since many of you are looking for inspiring 'photos' and maybe even how to capture your own, I wanted to share a few personal insights and tips I’ve picked up over the years. Photography for me is about experiencing the moment and then trying to translate that feeling into an image. First off, let’s talk about gear. While it’s true that you often see ‘photographers with large cameras on tripods’ in epic locations, you don’t always need the most expensive kit. My trusty camera, whether it's a Canon EOS or something similar, combined with a sturdy tripod, has been my best friend. A tripod is absolutely crucial for sharp landscape shots, especially in low light or when you want to achieve those silky water effects in a river or a slot canyon. It allows you to slow down, compose your shot carefully, and really nail the focus. When I'm heading out to capture 'photos' of a snow-capped mountain or the vibrant walls of a slot canyon, preparation is key. I always scout locations virtually beforehand to understand the light – when the sun hits those peaks or illuminates the canyon walls just right. For example, shooting in Grand Teton National Park during sunrise or sunset can transform the landscape, creating dramatic shadows and golden light that really make the mountains pop. Similarly, the soft, diffused 'natural light' often found within slot canyons creates an almost otherworldly glow, highlighting the intricate rock formations. Composition is another huge element. It’s not just about pointing your camera at a beautiful scene. Think about what draws your eye in the 'photos' you love. Are there leading lines? A strong foreground element? When I was photographing that person standing on the natural rock arch, I made sure to frame the vast landscape around them to emphasize the scale and grandeur. For those majestic Teton Range shots, I often look for reflections in water or interesting textures in the foreground to add depth. Don't be afraid to experiment with different angles and perspectives. Sometimes, getting low to the ground or finding a unique vantage point can completely change the impact of your image. Finally, don’t let challenging conditions deter you. Shooting in falling snow, as I’ve done, or in the misty spray near a waterfall, can yield incredibly atmospheric 'photos.' Just make sure to protect your camera! And remember, every click of the shutter is a learning experience. The most important thing is to enjoy the process, connect with the environment, and let your passion shine through in your work.
