... Read moreBuilding Gunpla is one of my favorite ways to unwind, and I recently tackled the HG Grimoire Red Beret from the Gundam Build Divers series. I'd been eyeing this particular kit for a while because of its unique, somewhat chunky design and that iconic red beret head. It’s not one of the flashier mobile suits, but I saw so much potential for a gritty, custom look. My goal was to transform this standard HG kit into something that looked like it had seen some serious action, giving it a more realistic, battle-hardened vibe. I really wanted to bring out the details in its olive green and red armor, making sure every panel and joint told a story.
Starting with the panel lining, I used Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color in black. This step, while meticulous, is absolutely crucial for bringing out the inherent design details of any HG Grimoire or other Gunpla kit. I applied it directly into the recessed lines, letting capillary action do most of the work, and then cleaned up the excess with a cotton swab dampened with enamel thinner. It's amazing how much more definition and depth the mobile suit gains once you’ve highlighted all those intricate panel lines. I focused particularly on the larger armor plates and the unique leg design, ensuring clean lines that would provide a solid foundation for the weathering effects to come.
Next, the weathering process was where the real fun began, turning a clean plastic model into a battle-worn machine. I experimented with a few techniques to achieve that authentic look. For general dirt and grime, I used a dry brushing technique with a dark grey paint, lightly dragging the brush across raised edges. For dust and subtle mud effects, I applied Tamiya Weathering Master pastels in various earthy tones, carefully blending them with a cotton bud. To simulate chipped paint, especially around the edges of the olive green and red armor and the joints, I used a small piece of sponge dipped in dark metallic paint, dabbing it gently. The goal was to make it appear as if this Gundam Red Beret had been deployed in multiple combat zones, picking up scuffs and scratches along the way. I paid extra attention to the dark grey rifle, making sure it looked well-used and had a metallic sheen where worn, and subtly emphasized the white star emblem on its leg to give it an authentic, worn-out feel without obscuring the design.
The most rewarding part was seeing the HG Grimoire Red Beret come to life with all these custom touches. The distinctive red beret head and the overall silhouette gained so much character. It’s truly satisfying to take a standard Gunpla kit and infuse it with your own vision. For anyone looking to try their hand at customizing their 'grimoire build' or a 'custom grimoire' project, I’d highly recommend starting with a High Grade kit like this one. They’re forgiving and offer a fantastic canvas for experimentation. Don't be afraid to experiment with different paints, washes, and weathering mediums. The key is to build it up slowly, apply thin layers, and step back often to see how it's progressing. The Build Divers series has some excellent designs that lend themselves exceptionally well to these kinds of personal touches, making each build a unique adventure!
