February TBR List-BHM Edition ❤️💛💚🖤

In honor of Black History Month, I’m dedicating my February reading to books written by Black authors. I’m currently in grad school and my schedule is pretty packed, so I don’t expect to get through every book I want this month. That said, every book on this list will be read at some point this year. I’m excited to intentionally center Black voices and stories, even if it takes a little time 🤎📚

Choosing to dedicate reading time to Black History Month is a powerful way to expand our understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives. Among the titles mentioned, the magical HBCU setting in "Blood at the Root" by LaDarrion Williams immediately caught my attention—it's exciting to see contemporary stories rooted in such culturally rich environments. Additionally, the popular YA series by Tomi Adeyemi—starting with "Children of Blood and Bone"—is not only an engaging fantasy tale but also deeply weaves African mythology with powerful social themes. Personally, rereading these books has been both a joyful and enlightening experience that stays with you long after the last page. Books like "Blood Moon" by Britney S. Lewis, touted as a Black version of "Twilight" and "Vampire Diaries," break new ground in genre fiction by centering Black characters in supernatural narratives, which is refreshing and important for representation. Integrating these books into your TBR can offer a blend of introspective storytelling, thrilling fantasy, and cultural depth. For fellow grad students or busy readers, I recommend setting small yet consistent reading goals—like dedicating 15 minutes daily—to make progress without feeling overwhelmed. This approach helped me appreciate every story without pressure. Ultimately, centering Black voices through reading not only celebrates Black History Month but fosters ongoing education and empathy. Whether you get through every book this month or spread them across the year, each page turned is a step toward deeper cultural awareness and connection.
