Tools that help me keep a 4.00 GPA in grad school!
I'm in my third semester of grad school (pursuing a Master of Arts in Special Education with a concentration in Autism Spectrum Disorder), and I'm absolutely loving it! Here are a few tools that help me keep a 4.00 GPA:
- iPad and Apple Pencil: Instead of using a regular pencil and paper, I like to use my iPad and Apple Pencil to take notes, read textbooks, and so much more. I also really like to use Goodnotes! I always download the lecture slides and take notes directly on them.
- Planner (and cute pens!): I currently use the Passion Planner, and I love it! It has space for your personal life and work/school, an hourly breakdown, a "space for infinite possibilities," and so much more. If you want a tour of the inside, let me know! I might switch to the digital version next year just so I always have it with me.
- Multiple tabs: I am always, always, ALWAYS using my computer with a split screen. Here, you can see it with just two tabs, but I often have it split into four quadrants so I can see everything that I need all at once. I also HIGHLY recommend doing schoolwork on a desktop computer instead of a laptop if you are able to because it has a lot more screen space. I also find that sitting up at a desk keeps me more engaged than laying on the couch with my laptop.

Earning a 4.00 GPA in grad school can feel like an uphill battle, but I've found that it's less about innate brilliance and more about leveraging the right strategies and tools effectively. It's truly a journey where consistency and smart habits pay off. Let me share a bit more about how these specific tools help me stay on top of everything and maintain my grades. My iPad and Apple Pencil, paired with Goodnotes, have revolutionized my note-taking. Instead of just passively listening to lectures, I download the slides and actively annotate them directly on my iPad 10th generation. This isn't just about going paperless; it's about engaging with the material. I can highlight, draw diagrams, insert quick reference images, and even handwrite complex concepts or examples like 'Trials-to-Criterion' right into my notes. This active process helps information stick better, and having everything digitally organized means I can easily search for keywords or topics when reviewing for exams, saving precious study time. Then there's my trusty Passion Planner. This isn't just any planner; it's a comprehensive tool that helps me balance my academic demands with personal life commitments. With its decorative cover and my favorite cute pen, it actually makes the act of planning enjoyable! What I love most is its ability to break down my schedule hourly, allowing me to block out time for lectures, deep study sessions, assignments, and even much-needed breaks. Mapping out my week, identifying key deadlines, and chunking larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks are crucial for avoiding last-minute stress and ensuring all my submissions are polished and on time. This proactive approach to time management is absolutely essential for maintaining a high GPA in a demanding grad program. Finally, my desk setup with multiple tabs and split screens is a total game-changer for productivity. I primarily use a desktop computer displaying split screens, which gives me ample space to work efficiently. Imagine having lecture slides open on one side and content objectives or research articles on the other; it eliminates constant tab-switching and helps me keep all relevant information in my line of sight. This setup fosters deep work and minimizes distractions, allowing me to stay focused during intensive study periods. Sitting at a dedicated desk, rather than lounging on a couch, also mentally signals that it's time to be productive, maximizing my engagement and concentration. It’s about creating an optimal environment where every resource is at my fingertips. Beyond just the tools, achieving a 4.00 GPA is also about consistency, staying curious, and practicing self-care. These tools empower me to be consistent, to organize my research materials, and to schedule in those vital breaks. They don't do the work for me, but they certainly make the journey toward academic excellence smoother and more achievable. It's all about finding what works best for you and sticking with it!
