Our generation

It’s 8:30 in the morning and I can’t stop thinking about the generations that are entering early and middle adulthood.

These generations are impactful in so many ways. Great minds are hidden behind a world of fabricated skits and clickbait schemes. We are generations who have made social justice issues the number one enemy, and I am proud of our ability to connect with people from all places. But we have a fatal flaw. In a world of connectivity via screens, we lack the ability to connect face to face. We receive information from the internet better than we do one another. We feed into the fear of rejection. We escape to our phones when a second of silence enters. We overthink the perceptions people may have of us and we shy away from conversing with anyone holding conflicting views…which…is most people.

I don’t think that we have to be everyone’s friend, but I think there’s something special about talking to strangers, finding out a little more about the people we share the earth with, and maybe learning a thing or two about a thing or two.

... Read moreAs we reflect on the current landscape of our generation, it becomes clear that understanding each other's perspectives is more vital than ever. With the rise of social media, we often prioritize online interactions over authentic, personal connections. It's crucial to recognize that engaging in candid conversations can foster empathy and understanding. Many members of our generation are passionate about social justice, advocating for change and progress. This dedication to important issues demonstrates our collective desire to create a better world. However, the reliance on screens can hinder our ability to engage in meaningful discussions. To bridge this gap, we should actively seek out opportunities to speak with strangers, challenge our assumptions, and embrace differing viewpoints. This approach not only enriches our understanding but also fosters a sense of community. Furthermore, nurturing face-to-face communication skills will empower us to build stronger relationships and develop resilience against the fear of rejection that often stems from digital interactions. By cultivating these skills, we can inspire others to join the conversation, ultimately promoting a culture of inclusivity and mutual respect. As we navigate adulthood, let's strive to balance our online identities with authentic, real-world connections.

The Sophisticated Edit: Our Culture
Sophistication didn’t start in Paris…it started on MawMaw porch. We’ve been taught that sophistication has one look: White. But Black women have always practiced elegance in our way! Let’s UNLEARN what the world told us was “too loud”. How Black Women Have Always Practiced Elegance: ✨

A yellow background displays blue text asking, "Is it really true that students these days aren't doing as well in school because of phones and social media?". A grinning emoji is at the end of the question, with "Lemon8 @ironcladx7" at the bottom left.
Did our generation do better in school?
It seems that a lot of teachers now are saying that smartphones and social media are to blame for the decline in students’ education. Thinking back to when our generation was in high school without smartphones, did we do better in our education than the current generation in school? #letschat
