Growing up in McMinnville, TN, I often reminisce about the days when high school students didn’t rely on backpacks to carry their books. Instead, many of us simply carried our textbooks in our arms, which might seem surprising to today's students who are used to heavy backpacks and all sorts of school gear. This small detail highlights how student lifestyles and school supplies have changed over the years. Back then, carrying books by hand felt more natural and less cumbersome than lugging around bulky backpacks. It was also a reflection of the simpler times. We didn’t have the endless array of electronic devices or notebooks that today’s students carry. Instead, the focus was on just the essentials. Walking through the halls without a backpack offered a different sense of freedom and lightness. Living in a close-knit community like McMinnville also made the school experience unique. Everyone knew each other, and the traditions held a lot of warmth and camaraderie. The way we carried our books was just a small part of that shared high school culture, one that many remember fondly. Nowadays, school bags are packed with not only books but laptops, tablets, chargers, and various other items. While this convenience is great for accessing diverse learning materials, sometimes I wonder if we’ve lost a bit of that simplicity and directness in school life. Whether you’re a student or a parent in McMinnville or elsewhere, reflecting on the old ways can offer a refreshing perspective.

Carried books and put others in locker. That’s how it was.
