... Read moreGrowing up, one of my fondest school memories was the creative and practical task of covering textbooks with brown paper bags. It was a ritual that not only kept our books protected but also gave us a small canvas for personal expression. I remember cutting and folding these bags with care, making sure each corner was neat and secure, which sometimes felt like a mini craft project. This old-fashioned method might seem quaint now, especially to children who’ve grown up with digital textbooks and sleek covers sold in stores. Yet, it served several helpful purposes—protecting textbooks from wear and tear, hiding personal notes, and even discouraging book borrowing that might lead to damage. Plus, it was environmentally friendly, repurposing something that might otherwise be discarded. Living in McMinnville, I noticed many local schools and families still appreciate this tradition, occasionally using brown paper bag covers for their nostalgic charm or as part of back-to-school preparations. Beyond utility, this practice also sparks conversations between parents and kids about how schooldays have changed and traditions that have lasted over time. If you’re looking for a simple DIY school project to share with your children or relive your own childhood, cutting and folding brown paper bags to cover schoolbooks is a wonderful idea. It’s affordable, creative, protective, and a great way to bond over shared experiences.
