... Read moreIt’s funny how often we hear ‘put yourself first,’ but then a wave of guilt washes over us the moment we actually try. I’ve been there, countless times. For years, I struggled with the idea of actually doing what's best for me because I thought it made me selfish. But honestly, that mindset was holding me back from so much personal growth and genuine happiness. The image of that graffiti—"DON'T FEEL GUILTY FOR DOING WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU"—really resonated with me because it’s such a powerful and simple truth. It’s a message we all need to internalize. But how do we actually get to that point where we can make choices for ourselves without that nagging voice in our head? For me, it started with understanding what 'the best feeling' truly meant. It wasn't about fleeting pleasure, but a deep sense of peace, alignment, and clarity. It’s the feeling of knowing you’re honoring your own needs, your values, and your energy. It’s waking up without dread, making decisions with confidence, and interacting with others from a place of fullness, not depletion. When you're constantly running on empty, you can't truly give your best to anyone or anything. So, how do you start? Identify Your Needs: This sounds simple, but it’s often overlooked. Take time for self-reflection. What genuinely recharges you? What drains you? What are your non-negotiables for your well-being? For me, it’s a quiet morning coffee, uninterrupted time for creative work, and saying 'no' to commitments that don't excite me. Set Clear Boundaries: This is crucial. It can be hard at first, especially with people you care about. But remember, a boundary isn't about pushing people away; it's about protecting your energy and time so you can be a better version of yourself for everyone. Start small: 'I can't take on that extra task this week,' or 'I need this evening to myself.' Challenge the Guilt: When guilt inevitably surfaces, question it. Where is it coming from? Is it a learned behavior? Is it truly serving you? Often, guilt is a conditioned response, not an objective truth. Reframe it: 'I'm not being selfish; I'm practicing self-care so I can show up more fully.' Small Steps, Big Impact: You don't have to overhaul your entire life overnight. Start with one small decision each day that prioritizes your well-being. Maybe it's taking a 15-minute walk, saying no to an optional social event, or simply giving yourself permission to rest. Each small victory builds momentum and reinforces that doing what's best for you is not only permissible but powerful. Embracing this journey has transformed my life. The feeling of truly being in control of my choices, free from the burden of unnecessary guilt, is incomparable. It has allowed me to cultivate deeper, more authentic relationships and pursue my passions with renewed vigor. Remember, you are worthy of that 'best feeling,' and it all starts with giving yourself permission to put your well-being first.
