... Read moreI remember a time when I felt like I was constantly swimming against the current, overwhelmed by future anxieties and past regrets. It was exhausting! Learning to truly 'surrender to the present moment' felt like an impossible task. But through my journey, I discovered that it’s not about giving up control entirely, but about trusting the flow and recognizing the incredible 'strength' we all possess within.
One of the biggest shifts for me was realizing that surrender isn't passive. It's an active choice to let go of what you can't control and focus your energy on what you can—your response to the moment. For instance, I used to dread Monday mornings. My mind would race with everything I needed to do, and I'd be stressed before my feet even hit the floor. Now, I start my day with a conscious breath, looking out at the sky, perhaps catching a glimpse of the moon fading or a 'starry sky' giving way to dawn. This simple act helps ground me, reminding me that this present moment is all I truly have.
To really 'surrender to the universe', I started practicing daily mindfulness. It doesn't have to be a full meditation session; sometimes it's just mindfully drinking my coffee, savoring each sip, or taking a walk and truly observing the leaves on the trees. When worries about the future inevitably creep in, I gently acknowledge them, tell myself, "Thank you for sharing, but I'm focusing on now," and redirect my attention back to my breath or my surroundings. It's like having a gentle internal conversation.
Another powerful technique I found incredibly helpful is journaling. When I feel overwhelmed, I write down all my fears and anxieties. This act of putting them on paper often makes them seem less daunting. Then, I write down what I can control in the situation and what I need to release to the universe. It's a way of symbolically handing over the burden. This practice helped me understand that like a 'full moon' illuminating the dark water, clarity often comes when we stop fighting the darkness and allow the natural light to guide us.
I've also learned to trust my intuition more. When faced with a decision, instead of overthinking it to paralysis, I try to tap into that quiet inner voice. It's incredible how often the 'right' path emerges when you stop forcing an outcome and allow yourself to be guided. This doesn't mean ignoring logic or planning, but rather finding a balance where you plan diligently and then trust the process, knowing you have the 'strength to swim through the seasons of your life,' come what may.
Embracing this mindset has brought a profound sense of 'serene' calm to my life. Challenges still arise, of course, but my reaction to them has changed. Instead of panicking, I ask myself, "What is this moment teaching me? How can I adapt and flow with this?" It's a journey, not a destination, and every day offers new opportunities to practice 'surrender to the present moment' and deepen my connection to the greater flow of life.
