Here's my go-to timing chart based on large eggs, starting in cold water, brought to a boil then simmered: 4-5 minutes: Super runny yolk, barely set whites. Perfect for dipping toast! This is my go-to for a truly dippy soft-boiled egg. 6 minutes: Runny, jammy yolk with fully set whites. My favorite for avocado toast! This is often what people mean by "soft-boiled." 7 minutes: Jammy, slightly firmer yolk. Great for salads where you want a little creaminess. Think medium-soft. 8 minutes: Firm but still moist yolk, with a hint of softness in the center. A true medium-boiled egg. 9-10 minutes: Almost fully set yolk, but still rich and vibrant. Great for deviled eggs or egg salad. This is moving into medium-hard territory. 11-12 minutes: Fully hard-boiled, firm and chalky-free yolk.
