Master Phrasal Verbs: Level Up Your Skills 🔑ℹ️⬇️

Learning phrasal verbs can feel like trying to decode a secret language. But with a bit of humor and some relatable examples, you’ll have these down in no time! Let’s have some fun with these common phrasal verbs:

A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb and one or more particles (like prepositions or adverbs) that, when combined, create a meaning different from the original verb. For example, “give up” means to surrender or quit, which is different from just “give.” Phrasal verbs are essential in English because they’re widely used in everyday conversations, idiomatic expressions, and informal writing. Mastering them helps in understanding native speakers better and makes your language sound more natural and fluent.

1. Make for = Contribute to

• Example: Too many late nights make for (contribute to) a sleepy day at work. No wonder I can’t keep my eyes open!

2. Pick on = Bully

• Example: My little brother loves to pick on (bully) me, but I just remind him who’s really in charge of the TV remote.

3. Put up with = Tolerate

• Example: I don’t know how much longer I can put up with (tolerate) my neighbor’s midnight karaoke sessions. My ears need a break!

4. Settle for = Accept

• Example: I wanted a fancy dinner, but I had to settle for (accept) a microwave meal instead. At least it wasn’t burnt this time!

5. Take on = Undertake

• Example: I decided to take on (undertake) a new hobby: painting. Now my living room looks like a rainbow exploded.

6. Turn on = Activate

• Example: Every time I turn on (activate) my phone, I’m greeted with a million notifications. Maybe I should turn it off and pretend they don’t exist.

7. Act up = Misbehave

• Example: My dog starts to act up (misbehave) the second he sees the leash. I guess walks aren’t his thing.

8. Add on = Append

• Example: I was happy with my order until I decided to add on (append) dessert. Now my wallet (and my waistline) are crying.

9. Back up = Reverse

• Example: I tried to back up (reverse) my car into the driveway, but I ended up backing into the neighbor’s trash can instead.

10. Break out = Escape

• Example: The hamster broke out (escaped) of his cage last night. Now I’m on a mission to find him before he finds the snacks.

11. Bring back = Restore

• Example: Listening to that 90’s playlist really brought back (restored) some memories. Who knew music could be a time machine?

12. Carry through = Accomplish

• Example: I thought it would be easy to carry through (accomplish) my New Year’s resolution. Turns out, I was wrong. Very wrong.

13. Come along = Accompany

• Example: My cat loves to come along (accompany) me on walks… from the window, where she judges me for leaving the house.

14. Come up = Arise

• Example: Just when I thought I had a quiet weekend, something urgent came up (arose) at work. So much for my Netflix plans.

15. Count out = Exclude

• Example: You can count me out (exclude) of any plans that involve running. My idea of cardio is walking to the fridge.

16. Cut across = Shortcut

• Example: I thought cutting across (taking a shortcut) the park would save time. Spoiler: it didn’t, and I’m late again.

17. Deal with = Manage

• Example: Dealing with (managing) my email inbox is like trying to empty the ocean with a spoon. It never ends!

18. Fall behind = Lag

• Example: I always fall behind (lag) in group projects because I’m too busy trying to make everything perfect. Perfectionist problems!

19. Get off = Alight

• Example: I was so deep in thought, I almost forgot to get off (alight) the bus at my stop. Guess I need to daydream less.

20. Give up = Surrender

• Example: After wrestling with the jar for ten minutes, I finally gave up (surrendered) and asked for help. Turns out, I’m not as strong as I thought.

... Read moreWow, those 20 phrasal verbs are a fantastic starting point! When I first started learning English, phrasal verbs felt like a secret code I could never crack. I'd hear native speakers use phrases like 'put up with' or 'pick on' and just draw a blank. It felt like a huge barrier to sounding natural and fluent. But trust me, with the right approach, you can totally master them! Don't let them intimidate you – they're actually one of the most fun parts of English once you get the hang of it. One of the biggest game-changers for me was learning phrasal verbs in context, not just as isolated definitions. For example, instead of just memorizing 'make for = contribute to,' I'd think of a sentence like, 'Too many late nights make for a sleepy day.' This helps you visualize and internalize the meaning. My personal trick? I started keeping a little notebook dedicated just to phrasal verbs, writing down the verb, its meaning, and a quirky example from my own life or something I heard. It makes them stick! Let's dive a little deeper into some of the ones mentioned in your queries. Many people search for lists of phrasal verbs using specific base verbs like 'put' or 'pick.' The article already gives great examples like 'put up with' (tolerate) and 'pick on' (bully). But there are so many more! For 'put,' you could also have 'put off' (to postpone) – like when I 'put off' doing laundry until I have nothing left to wear! Or 'put out' (to extinguish, or to inconvenience someone). For instance, 'Don't put yourself out for me' when someone offers to help a lot. See how versatile they are? And for 'pick,' besides 'pick on,' think about 'pick up.' This can mean to collect something ('I need to pick up groceries') or to learn something quickly ('I picked up some Spanish phrases on my trip!'). There's also 'pick out' meaning to choose, as in, 'I need to pick out a new outfit for the party.' Thinking about the different meanings of these common verbs really helps to expand your vocabulary. Another common question I often see is the difference between an 'idiom vs. phrasal verb.' This used to confuse me so much! A phrasal verb, as you know, combines a verb with a particle (like a preposition or adverb) to create a new meaning, like 'give up' (surrender) or 'get off' (alight) from the image. The meaning is often related, however indirectly, to the original verb. An idiom, on the other hand, is a phrase where the meaning cannot be understood from the individual words themselves. Think 'kick the bucket' (to die) or 'it's raining cats and dogs' (raining heavily). The image also mentioned 'give in' meaning 'yield' – this is definitely a phrasal verb! It's still connected to the act of 'giving' something, but specifically yielding. For those looking for 'easy phrasal verbs for kids' or just starting out, my advice is to focus on the most frequently used ones. Verbs like 'go,' 'get,' 'come,' 'take,' and 'make' are excellent starting points because they form hundreds of common phrasal verbs. For example, 'get up' (rise), 'go out' (leave), 'come in' (enter), 'take off' (depart, or remove clothing). You hear these every single day! Don't 'give in' to the frustration if it feels challenging at first. Learning phrasal verbs is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep practicing, try to use them in your own sentences, and you’ll find yourself speaking more naturally and understanding native speakers much better in no time. You've got this!
